An interview with Creative Assembly / Total War: Three Kingdoms

SEGA and Creative Assembly are bringing big changes to the typical Total War formula. More so then just copy-pasting the previous game, reskinning everything, putting in a new map and then tinkering a bit with some mechanics to come up with a title-specific gimmick or three.

First, Total War: Three Kingdoms is set during one of the bloodiest periods of China’s history, when the country was split between the Shu, Wei, and Wu dynasties, all of whom fought to become Emperor of the state. If history is any indicator, the creatives will include not just the three kingdoms but several surrounding states (I.E. Rome: Total War was also designed around three Roman factions.)

Second, It has two campaigns: a “Romance” mode and a “Classic” mode. Classic Mode will be more like the traditional Total War gameplay while the Romance Mode will cater to the players who have been playing the Total War Warhammer games instead. So, If you love both the historical and the fantastical, the different modes will be very interesting to try out.

Third & last, It sounds like Creative Assembly knows what they are doing here. At PAX West 2018, we were joined by Chris Budd, Project Technical Director on Total War: Three Kingdoms, as well as James Given, Community Manager at Creative Assembly, and we were able to ask them a bunch of questions on their upcoming title. Total War: Three Kingdoms is currently scheduled to launch in the first half of next year.
