GUEST REVIEW: 2012 The Movie

Emmerich brought out the fear of people thinking the world will come to an end in creating “2012.” This time he gives “disaster” a new term for his movies considering how ridiculous it all played out.

His special effects were still amazing, but at some points it felt like watching an old 50s movie the way the background wasn’t moving while they were running. The ending of the world was played out quite nicely, making different ways for states and countries to be demolished. However, I don’t buy that an old beat up RV can outrun roads collapsing and freeways falling down.

The plot isn’t the best Emmerich has come up with and the acting wasn’t the best that John Cusack has done in the past. This movie could be such a success because of the actual thought of the apocalypse. The film eventually does give you the feel-good moments with human-morals are the ultimate decision of who lives and who dies.

If you are worried about the end of the world, “Zombieland” has a much more interesting and entertaining take on it or if you enjoy Emmerich’s movies, rent “Day After Tomorrow” again. That way you aren’t sitting for 2h40 minutes wondering if it really will end.

Tee Time: REVIEW: Night at the Museum: BOTS DVD Edition!

 night_at_the_museum_2_poster

Hello robots, we’re here at another edition of Tee Time with Dr.Cyborg. In which I take a few minutes of time to talk to you about something that mildly interests me, while I play the greatest game ever conceived, Golf! Accompanied by my trusty caddie Slugtron,  this time we’ll be talking about the new DVD and Blu-ray  release of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. So pour yourselves a swift kick in the nuts, ( 1 part goldschlager, 1 part jager, 1 part sambuca, 1 part vodka, serve over ice.) and let’s go Golfing!

Doctor Cyborg gets all the ladies! -Slugtron

I watched the first Night at the Museum, and found it to be an acceptable, fun movie. So I went in thinking if this sequel was bad, but fun to watch, I would consider it a good sequel. It basically did this to the letter, but it wouldn’t hurt if you don’t mind drinking around your kids to watch it with a good swift kick in the nuts. (Ingredients listed above.)

Practice swing, mark it a nine.

Doctor Cyborg is great! –Slugtron

Thanks, Slugtron!

The movie begins with Ben Stiller’s character moving on in his career to be a successful infomercial sales men. Stopping by the museum, and finding that they are shipping  all the exhibits into deep storage under the Smithsonian (The biggest museum in the world.) The stone that brings the museum to life at night is obviously brought to storage as well.

Of course it would have been a hole in one if it didn’t hit the tree. No. I’m not going to shoot it again, just put down two and we’ll move to the next hole.

Doctor Cyborg *-%@^* Bzzzzzt! you coward, how dare you add a complimentor to my speech circuit! –Slugtron

Geez Slugton, you didn’t have to break it, those things cost a lot of money.

You wanna know somthing else, Doctor Cyborg sucks at golf! –Slugtron

Now you’re going too far, I made you!

You couldn’t make a turkey sandwich you putz! –Slugtron

Well anyway, back to Night at the Museum. I’m not even going to begin to break this movie down as a grown robot analyzing a movie. This movie is for children, and at best is going to keep your attention for a while, and maybe make you laugh a few times. Basically what I ask myself when buying a children’s movie is; Will this movie bother me if it’s played on a continuous loop for the next month if my children like it? The cameo rolls by, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Christopher Guest, and none other than George Foreman himself, certainly help the movie along. But aside from it being partially entertaining for brains, it’s also a great children’s movie.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is being released into three different sets, The first being the single disk DVD. On Amazon for $9.99 If you don’t own a Blu-ray player, this is a good deal. Even with just one disk it is loaded with special features.

The Blu-ray release is a tremendous bargain right now as well, because it comes with the DVD version as well, and is being sold on Amazon for a measly $18.99 With every bonus you can imagine. Including, commentaries, gag reels, and a digital copy.

And finally Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Two-Disc Monkey Mischief Pack) For $22.99 which doesn’t contain the Blu-ray, and therefore in my opinion is the worst bargain, unless you’re looking to buy it as a gift for a little kid that really likes monkeys. Because that is what the second disk is all about. (DVD-rom features for monkey games etc.)

Overall I don’t want to give this a number, I would much rather give it some words. So I’m giving it a gravy out of a possible philosophers stone.

See you again Next time, might be a while because I’m in the middle of dating multiple fine robot girls, all of them happen to be really sexy.

Doctor Cyborg’s only date is a bottle of liquid wrench! –Slugtron

GUEST REVIEW: Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut! Blu-ray

 watchmencover

HELLO all you BIG, FABULOUS, SHINY ROBOTS! Flaming Gynoid here again! So, Sundays are my typical days to just hang out, and do me some “Men Watching”!! You know the kind I’m speaking of; where you sit and just watch all the beautiful men walk by, admire their faces, bodies, clothes, etc. The point I’m trying to make is I did some “Men Watching” today, BUT–not the usual kind, instead, I decided to do my man watching at home. Yes you silly Robots, I watched the Blu-ray version of Watchmen the Ultimate Cut.

Oh, where do I begin? First, watching Blu-Ray is the way all movies should be seen, and on a big, delicious BIG screen TV to boot. Now if you’re anything like me, you have at least 3 different versions of the movie, mostly because they love to release different versions every 5 months or so. Damn those studios, and damn me for falling for it! The actual movie in this specific set is a combination of Watchmen Directors Cut, and The Black Freighter (T.B.F.), the animated movie that is intertwined within the actual movie, trying to replicate the graphic novel. My personal opinion is that I prefer the two movies to stand on their own, but for diehard fans, the Ultimate Cut might be right for you.

silkspecter

Now, I know that a lot of diehards were disappointed by the movie as a whole…but stand back and cut Zack some slack, you PICKY Bitches. Visually the movie was spectacular. The cast was perfect. Yes, perfect…I didn’t stutter. Most everyone hated Malin Akerman as Laurie Jupiter/ Silk Spectre II, but watching her on screen in that tight black & yellow latex suit, I was salivating, and that’s coming from the Flaming Gynoid! Who knows, maybe it’s because I wanted a suit like that of my own, or maybe it was because she was so damn lucky and won herself a trophy like Dr. Manhattan(Crudup). HELLO! I don’t even know where to begin with Dr. M. First, let’s all take a moment to thank ZACK, for allowing the true, let’s say, “nature” of Dr. M to grace itself on screen for at least 50% of Dr.M’s screen time. Hot Flashes for a moment! Could you please do the best of Dr. M DVD next?

 gayguyeatingdrmanhattenswiener

Okay boys, enough about me and my own selfish desires…let’s get back to the movie and its juicy details…..

‘The Ever so fabulous, delicious, Ultimate Cut’:

The running time of this version with T.B.F is over three and a half FABULOUS hours & fills in the missing pieces from the graphic novel along with a few other small live-action scenes, that weren’t in the Director’s Cut.

‘T.B.F’ is a grim, icky, and dark tale that parallels the lives of different Watchmen, particularly Veidt’s and Rorschach’s, & their compulsion to fight evil everywhere they think they find it. The simple animation and voice of Gerald Butler (seen below, you might remember his abs from 300), brings this intriguing and, I assume, fan-favorite aspect of the story to life.

 gerard-butlerswimsuit

‘Watchmen’ is a post-modern tale about costumed vigilantes with complicated and true-to-life psychological profiles and a man with god-like earth-shaking powers, and lets not forget his god like tool he was blessed with. HELLO!!! Many of you out there said it was near impossible to film. Some tried, and many failed before they even began. It’s probably a blessing it took this long to make the movie. I think waiting that long helped so they could find the perfect guy to direct, & Zack Snyder was the right man for the job …that’s what I said, and I’m Not Taking it back.

IN my own humble, yet wise opinion, the film is uncompromising and noncommercial. It’s the ‘Watchmen’ movie we’ve always wanted, but never thought we’d get. I crave ‘Watchmen: the Ultimate Cut’. I’m thrilled I bought it. Although I’m not happy about the price I paid for it. I bought my copy at Best Buy for a heavy tag of $50.00. If you’re patient, and don’t mind the delivery wait time, our wonderful friends at Amazon can give it to you for at least $20.00 less, on (Blu-Ray)

Enjoy, my silly, robotic friends.

Editor’s note: If you haven’t got the original graphic novel you are really missing out, it is amazing Watchmen the Graphic novel for $9.99 on Amazon.

‘The Dark Knight’ Holds Firm Against Stupid Sparkly “Vampires”

 twilightcomic

It’s no secret. You would be hard-pressed to find a single robot on this site that gives two shits about anything Twilight – other than we think it is single-handedly detroying the vampire genre, but we won’t go there right now.

Over the weekend, The Twilight Saga: New Moon set new records for a midnight opening with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters and for a single day opening with $72.7 million from 4,024 theaters. However, geeks a nerds who hold the same distaste for Twilight do have a reason to rejoice!

Our beloved superheroes (and their superior films), Batman and Spider-Man, held firm against the Twilight onslaught maintaining their place as the first and second biggest domestic weekend openings with $158 million (The Dark Knight) and $151 million (Spider-Man 3) respectively. New Moon opened with $140.7 million.

So, while it seems that Twihardstards are everywhere these days, they can’t hold a candle to all of us nerds and geeks!

Tee Time With Dr. Cyborg: A Christmas Carol Edition!

 a-christmas-carol-poster

Hello everyone, here we are again at the Tee with Doctor Cyborg. In which I take time out of my busy golf schedule to talk to you about whatever I feel like, while golfing at a slightly reduced pace, alongside my faithful caddy Slugtron! Today we will be doing some holiday golfing, and talking about Robert Zemeckis’ new film A Chrismas Carol. So pour yourself some Homemade Eggnog (12 eggs, 3 pints heavy cream, 1 cup sugar, nutmeg, 1 cup bourbon whiskey, 1 cup cognac, 1/2 tsp salt. Serve in a punch bowl) and lets go golfing!

The biggest question I had to ask myself when going to see a remake of this classic story was, why? And to be perfectly honest I don’t know if there’s a good answer. Beowulf, Zemeckis’ last film made sense to me, and I thought it turned out really good. (It did have Neil Gaiman attached to the script after all) Beowulf is a classic story, but popular culture has yet to be flooded with its presence, and therefore I thought it was a good choice.

The Christmas Carol story is admittedly amazing, but it has been told so many times, and told well most of the time. Including the book itself which is still highly accessible and readable. But that doesn’t make this movie a mistake outright. This is a cartoon, making it easy to take kids to, and it’s also a more classic interpretation of the story, which isn’t predominant most of the times I’ve seen it told. Therefore it does have some value, but on “Par” with Tim Burton’s recant of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

“Slugtron, the nine iron you idiot! I’m trying to kill a reindeer not an infant! “

eh, where was I? Oh yeah…The next question I was asking myself was, Jim Carey? followed by. Really? And I went in with a bad attitude because I didn’t get it. But honestly he wasn’t over playing the role, there were a few moments that I was annoyed with his face as The Ghost of Christmas Past, but he really wasn’t that much of a ham. He didn’t ruin the movie. The movie wasn’t even really that funny, I think it focused mostly on telling the story visually, and carefully. Which I think are some of Zemeckis’ best strengths. But not ruining a movie isn’t a good reason to cast someone. Jim Carey in multiple roles was definitely a mistake.

Because this movie was based in the 19th century, it lacked a certain…how should I say…robots! I find this highly disparaging. But it didn’t even try to make up for its lack of robots with its CG. I felt some of the scenery and shots were outstanding. I really thought the way they handled Marley (Gary Oldman) was awesome, but the scenes aiming to be 3-D roller coaster rides were out of place, and the character models really weren’t very good.

The models looked like they fell out of Girl Shrek’s vagina! –Slugtron

 shrek8

I will give them credit for mood though. The scenes that were supposed to be scary visually built the right mood. (I know because the human child I took to see it, began to cry because he was so scared! How’s that for proof?)

One thing that surprised me was with the way they did the modeling, It felt like you were looking at the characters faces, but  I could barely tell who the cameo roles were, though some of them did stand out. Bob Hoskins, Mr. Eddy Valiant was definitely an exception to the rule. (Man O’ man is he a good actor.)

Overall I felt that the movie stuck to telling a good story, kept it targeted for an appropriate age group, and didn’t break the boundaries at all. This is good if you are going to the theatre and want to play it safe. It also makes your film instantly forgettable. It was a slightly new take, but it was slight.

It did some things exceptionally, for example, using the fact that they were making a cartoon to there advantage. Some of the stuff they pulled off couldn’t have been done as well with live action. But some things weren’t awesome, for example, I know it’s a Christmas movie, but they were way to forceful with Christmas music. Honestly the story of A Christmas Carol works wonders without Christmas at all. In fact I prefer it when it’s left out, as in Ingmar Bergman’s Wild Strawberries. It tells a very similar tale, just not at Christmas.

Damn the eighteenth green already, I guess I better wrap it up. Basically it wasn’t horrible, if you are ever going to see it, make it be at the movie theatre. It’s a solid 6 out of 10. Jim Carey isn’t evil, he’s just an idiot.

Spider-Man 4 Black Cat Casting Rumors Run Rampant

 blackcat

Deadline.com is now throwing another name in the rumor mill with regards to Spider-Man 4 Black Cat casting, Anne Hathaway.

While Sony Pictures insists no decisions have been made, sources tell me that the producers have approached Anne Hathaway to star in the film.

Also adding to the list is UGO, who reports:

UGO has learned that Julia Stiles has met with a casting company in New York to discuss the upcoming Spider-Man 4!

This makes sense based on the recently debunked rumor that Rachel McAdams was set to star. Could this mean we’ll be seeing the Black Cat saving Spidey’s last dance? We haven’t heard specifics about which role she was eyeing and assume it’s all early talks, but why not?

If you haven’t been keeping track, these are names number three and four in not as many weeks that have been dropped into the ring for possible Black Cat castings. I’m not sure exactly what/who the sources are for these “exclusive” casting news stories, but Rachel McAdams herself has already debunked the rumor that she is the running for the role. The sudden influx of casting “news” about this role may be a lot of people trying to jump on this bandwagon to garner some exclusive-news attention – or, it’s probably just as possible that the producers really are just out there hitting the pavement hard trying to find their Felicia Hardy and approaching actresses left and right.

What do you think?

Here’s the supposed roster of potential Felicia Hardys thus far:

I’m thinking that none of these women provide the cup size Kill-tacular-tron feels is necessary to fill this pivitol role that has yet to even be confirmed in the movie.

First look at Hawkman in Smallville

 smalvillehawkman

Via- tvguidemagazine.com

Geoff Johns’ two-parter “Society” and “Legends” (now reported as a two-hour episode opposed to the two episodes as originally planned), featuring the Justice Society of America (or JSA for short), has a lot of DC fans excited. This week TV Guide revealed the first JSA member in full costume, Michael Shanks as Carter Hall/Hawkman that’s already starting controversy amongst fans.

Well, we’ve all complained for years about the lack of costumes in Smallville, now it looks like we may complain about a costume being too accurate! Michael Shanks (of Stargate SG1 fame) is set to don the Nth Metal wing harness of Hawkman, the multiple-times reincarnated alien Thangarian.

On the plus side, it is an accurate Hawkman costume (I know I said it may be too accurate), but possibly this means we’ll have more costumed super-types (Clark, I’m looking in your direction). Plus, it may look better on screen with the actor moving around (I really didn’t like the Batman costume or the Tumbler until I saw it on the screen in Batman Begins). And if we’re lucky (and judging by the TV Guide interview with Shanks), we’ll get an Ollie/Carter throw-down possibly resulting in some Bwa-Ha-HAs!

Really though, the whole reason to watch Smallville is an exercise in “waiting for something cool to happen”, i.e. waiting for Superman to well, be Super, and stuff from the comics. Really though, Hawkman in his Hawkman gear and the JSA is one of those cool things, even if his outfit looks a bit goofy.

All that remains to be seen is how the other members (Brent Stait Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate), Britt Irvin Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl) will appear. Will they have comic-accurate costumes as well?

Superman Returns Directors Cut petition

 superman-inspace

Love it or hate it, Superman Returns (despite the absentee dad stalker parts) was both a decent Superman movie and an homage to the original films (not counting 3 and 4). Ignoring the Land Barron Lex Luthor and the love triangle, the first time I watched it gave me that sense of wonder I had watching the original first two movies.

Superman Returns The Bryan Singer Cut Trailer

(As far as I can tell, it’s not an official trailer, rather a fan made trailer with the cut-out footage. If I’m wrong let me know and I’ll update it)

Additional bonus footage can be found via the link below-

Superman Returns cut scenes

Superman Returns is by far no perfect Superman movie (though I’d say that about the originals as well), but SR did feel like something was missing, especially the part with his trip to the remains of Krypton. Whenever given a choice, I always opt for the directors cut (or extended version with bonus material). Seeing as I’ve still not bought SR, I’d defiantly go out and buy it on the release day if it becomes available in an extended  director’s cut.

DC Universe The Color of Fear: Romat-Ru and Karu-Sil Figures now available! + Wave  11 to be offered on Mattycollector.com

 dcuc11

Online ordering went live this Monday for the Sinestro Corps two-pack of Romat-Ru and Karu-Sil. Origianaly plannes as the first of the last two DCU figue 2-packs. According to actionfigurepics.com, Mattel says the orders have been strong for the figures. I’d imagine it’s due to the figures themselves (especially for Green Lantern fans) as they’re more popular visible characters as opposed to previous offerings.

 Color-of-Fear-2-pack p4023_fullsizeimage01

Also announced, DC Universe Wave 11 will be available on Mattycollector.com sometime after the holidays. Wave 11 will be sold as a case of eight figures including both versions of Steppenwolf.

Good news for DC fans, especially with the current Wave 10 Wal-Mart Exclusive “Unavailability” and impossible to find anywhere Wave 11 (and virtually nonexistent Target exclusive Public Enemies line) . Don’t get me wrong, I’ve at least seen Wave 10 come out and hit my local area (and sold before even getting a glimpse of the figures with the exception of Power Girl and Morrison JLA Era Batman), but they’re impossible to find just like previous releases. Seriously, how difficult should it be to get a damned Robotman figure?

According to Mattel the Wave 11 figures were to be heavily ordered with wide-spread availability. Unfortunately as with previous waves, they’ve barely had time to breath before being bought up by collectors and ebay resellers. As a matter of fact, it’s probably easier to find the figures on ebay and pay the $20-$30 plus shipping if you’re willing to part with 2 to 3 times the price (though you may find the figure loose without the Build-a-Figure part for half that).

Most of the goodness of the DCU figures is the random characters slipped into the line that are not Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman. I’ve been collecting DC Direct and DC Classics (when I can find them) for years now, but the difficulty in finding the figures is starting to kill my interest in DC Figures. Between the cost of plastic resulting in almost $20 pricing on DC Direct and the inability to find the DC Classics line, it’s really killing my interests in figures, despite my love of all things DC.

With the upcoming online availability of Wave 11, hopefully this will help fans wanting the figures by having the ability to purchase them for their collections. Also, some Toys r’ Us are test-marketing pre-pays on the DCU figures not unlike pre-paying for a video game before release. Hopefully this will expand to all TrU’s and possibly lead into larger orders.

GUEST REVIEW: Star Trek Blu-ray

Introducing The Flaming Gynoid for his first review!

 292px-Star_Trek_Blu-ray_Region_A_cover

HELLO all you FABULOUS Trekkers out there! I’m sure you have absolutely and positively seen the new, OUTRAGEOUS Star Trek movie, directed by none other than J.J Abrams himself, and starring the ever, oh so handsome Chris Pine, just released on DVD.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, and heavens above, I can’t imagine why? Unless of course you are one of those bull-headed creatures, who are stubborn about re-makes…well get over it, HONEY! It’s not a re-make. In fact, it’s the beginning of a beautiful relationship that hopefully will dish out a few more chapters in this revamped, re-imagined, and re-inventive story.  For you loyal fans, there is even a cameo by one of the greats, but I’m not going to be the Spoiler-Monster and tell.

The movie is full of action, emotional impact, humor, and sheer fun for moviegoers of all ages. The new Star Trek introduces us to James T. Kirk (Pine), a witty and aimless young man, who’s encouraged by Starfleet Captain Pike (Greenwood) to make a change in his life and enlist in the fleet. Of course, when he’s at the academy, Kirk runs amok, but also wins the heart of his soon to be ship mates. Spock, the ever so handsome Vulcan (Quinto), the dashing Dr. McCoy (Urban), the ever so lovely  Uhura (Saldana), the brave & bold Sulu (Cho), loveable Chekhov (Yelchin), and our classic, and memorable Scottie (Pegg).

 chrispinenoshirt

Hardcore fans with a bone to pick may find faults, but how do you resist, when you can watch Kirk take on the Kobayashi Maru scenario or hear McCoy bark, “Damnit, man, I’m a doctor, not a physicist!” OH, sends chills up my spine.

As for the release of the DVD, there are three different options to choose from,  going to the local Target, or neighborhood FYE. Personally, I like to buy all my collection pieces from AMAZON.com. They seem to beat the price pants off those other guys. And my personal choice would have to be the three disc+ digital copy Blu-ray set. 19.99 On Amazon.

They also have a two disc digital copy edition, and lastly and ever so boring single disc edition. Whatever! I suppose if you are pinching pennies that would be the option, and you can get it for a measly 14.99 on Amazon, but honeys, if you are pinching, just go to the local red-box, and spend a dollar…because clearly you don’t need it in your collection if you dare buy the single disc edition.

I gave this movie, and the Blu-ray collection set, 7 out of 10 Beam me up Scottys! But don’t take my word for it; I guess you’ll have to see for yourself.

Spider-Man 4 Casting News

 Spider-Man 3

Did Peter and MJ make a baby in this scene?

To start off, a few days ago we posted a rumor/news story that Rachel McAdams was in the running for Black Cat in Spider-Man 4. Of course, since no one knows for sure if Black Cat will even be in Spider-Man 4, this was questionable at best. Well, sure enough, Miss McAdams debunked the rumor herself:

From Entertainment Weekly: “That’s a total rumor, I have to say,” the actress, who will next be seen in the Dec. 25 action-adventure tentpole Sherlock Holmes, tells EW. “I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.” A rep for Sony Pictures concurs: “It’s an Internet rumor, as so many things are these days.”

So, there you go, as of right now, just a rumor.

Also on the Spider-Man 4 casting rumor front, Spoilertv.com is saying there apparently has been a casting call put out for a “2 or 3 year old boy to play 2 year old, Caucasian with RED HAIR, an adorable toddler with an engaging personality, on set experience preferred. IDENTICAL TWINS ONLY.”

Spoiler TV jumps to the conclusion that this could be MJ and Peter’s baby, but they are admittedly not “experts” on the Spider-Man story. Those of you who do know a lot about Spider-Man lore, you know that in an alternate universe, MJ and Peter do end up having a baby girl who later becomes Spider-Girl. But in the continuity that I am assuming the Spider-Man movies are following, MJ lost the baby during the events of the much hated “Clone Saga” -which, I know, doesn’t and probably never will happen in the movies, but my point is, they don’t have a kid. Does this mean that it isn’t their kid? No, but I highly doubt all of a sudden the two are going to have a child in the fourth installment, especially since they had a kind of giant step backwards in their relationship in Spider-Man 3. I just don’t see them going in that direction.

The other conclusion that is being drawn by “fans” is that it could be a young Cletus Cassiday -who later grows up to be Carnage. This is stupid. If you honestly think this, you’re obviously not paying attention to what has been going on with these movies on the screen and behind the scenes. Let’s break it down: Sam Raimi has been given more control over this fourth installment; he never wanted Venom in the third one, that was more of a push from the Avi Arad and the studio; people hated the Venom story arc in the third one, do you think fans really want to see another debacle? That all said I just don’t see Raimi going the direction of another symbiote villain storyline.

As far as my opinion on the matter goes, I think the boy will be one of two people: A random kid Spider-Man saves. Or, Doctor Connors son. He does have a wife and kid in the comics, and while their is no mention of them so far in the movies, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. I would certainly add another dynamic if Peter has to throw down with Doctor Connors as The Lizard while simultaneously not kicking his ass too hard because it’s really his friend and protecting his wife and kid from him (or protecting the identity of the Lizard from them).

I just don’t see them throwing a kid (let alone a toddler kid) into the mix at this point.
