When “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” hit theaters last year I went in to the theater wide eyed and full of hope. That hope wasn’t dashed by the viewing. While the flick has some objective problems, when it comes to TMNT I remain eternally optimistic. As I’ve written about many times before, the Turtles have long had an element of silliness and one shouldn’t take it too seriously. At the end of each viewing, when the credits roll, and I’m scraping the bottom of the popcorn bowl, I’ve had fun. That’s what the Turtles are about for me. Fun.
Love it or hate it, the 2014 Michael Bay produced live action movie did well enough to earn itself a sequel and a visit to the hallowed halls of the internet this morning revealed a trailer I wasn’t expecting. This time around the filmmakers aren’t holding anything back, this is no half minute teaser, this is the full shebang.
This trailer, which stands at roughly two and a half minutes gives us Casey Jones, Bebop and Rocksteady, Baxter Stockman, Shredder, April, and of course the Turtles. A viewing of the 2014 flick reveals some pretty heavy “borrowing” from “The Amazing Spider-Man” and this new flick seems to take the same philosophy. There is imagery incredibly evocative of both the “Spider-Man” franchise and Marvel’s “Avengers.” Here’s hoping it isn’t a failed attempt at emulation.
The trailer gives the sense that the sequel, titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” will have the same tone and attitude as its predecessor which means, it will probably have some of the same problems. But it will probably also be as much fun.
Needless to say, I’m incredibly excited to strap a tie around my face, grab some snacks, turn off my brain, and enjoy another visit with my favorite half shelled heroes.
