Box Office Report

After 3 weeks at the top “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has fallen to second place. Cap was knocked down by “The Other Woman” a revenge comedy that knew it had an audience. With an audience that was 75% female and 65% over 25 this movie knew its target market and did well there. However, the reviews are bad (including ours) and I don’t see it staying in the top 5 for too long. Along with “The Other Woman” we had “Brick Mansions” and “The Quiet Ones” open nationwide. “The Quiet Ones” is almost tied for the biggest bomb of 2014, it opened at just $4 million. “Brick Mansions” did a little bit better with $9.6 million but may still struggle to recoup the almost $30 million budget. The summer movie season kicks off with “Amazing Spider-man 2” so the top 5 should have an interesting shake up coming in May.

  1. The Other Woman: $24.7 which is a little over half of the budget. Should hold for a few weeks.
  2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier: $16 and 37% drop, Spidey 2 will be the first superhero competition for Cap.
  3. Heaven is for Real: $13.8 and at $52 overall it is probably going to be the most successful Christian film this year.
  4. Rio 2: A 38% drop to $13.65 this sequel is closing in on $100 million but that was also its budget.
  5. Brick Mansions: The remake of a French film made $9.6 and probably will drop off short of $40 million.

What happened to “Transcendence” you say? Well it dropped off 62% down to $4.1 million and is under $18 million total, it will be lucky to make up a quarter of its budget.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
