Almost twenty years ago Luc Besson dropped The Fifth Element on the world and it’s never been the same. Since then, rumors of a sequel have swirled around but never materialized. Besson has gone on to do some incredibly popular films, but he’s never quite returned to the operatic science fiction glory of former days.
It seems all that may be about to change. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is not a sequel to the aforementioned film but the trailer makes it feel like a fraternal twin. Based on the french comic book Valérian and Laureline, it follows the two titular characters, operatives of the human territories, on a mission to the intergalactic city of Alpha.
The film is set for release July, 2017.
