The Nintendo Direct held this morning covered upcoming Wii U and 3DS games. I will go over some of the highlights for me. First up, Super Mario 3D World launching November 22. This game is looking better and better. It mmakes me happy I jumped on the Wii U Wind Waker bundle. Some interesting things I noticed from the new trailer:
- Using fruit power ups multiple instances of your character appear ingame.
- Just like in Super Mario Bros. 2 each character will have their own special abilities.
- Lots of classic power ups include the Hammer Brothers boomerang suit and the Tanooki Costume.
- The propeller block head has returned. A canon block head and goomba helmet were also shown.
- More interactive objects such as baseballs, soccer balls, a potted piranha and ice skate.
- The overworld looks to be free roaming. This could introduce new secrets and warp zones.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze has been delayed, unfortunately. It will now be released in February 2014. Nintendo sends their condolences.
Super Smash Brothers Wii U and 3DS will include Sonic the Hedgehog. This is great news, even if it isn’t that surprising. I thought he was one of the stand out characters in the last Smash Brothers game. This series is one of my favorites. I love getting a group of friends together and playing some single screen multiplayer.
Pikmin 3 downloadable content was announced and made available today. Stages 7 through 10 are in the package. One of the levels will be given out for free with the game update today. If you decide to buy the set, you will only be out two dollars. Nintendo also mentioned more DLC will be made available soon.
There were also some some surprising twists about The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Nintendo has been evaluating some of the conventions that make a Zelda game what it is. One of them were these two rules:
- Get a new item at a new dungeon
- Solve puzzles using this new item
This inspired a change with the items in the game. In A Link Between Worlds you can rent any item at any time from Ravio’s shop. This will coincide with the ability to tackle the dungeons in any order. I am excited Nintendo is pushing for new conventions in their first party titles. I wonder how this will affect the overall plot and flow of the game.
Stay tuned for more trailers from today’s Nintendo Direct. What was your favorite announcement from today?
