New Rewards Program from Sony

Sony has announced a new expansion to their Rewards program for loyal customers. If you already have a Sony credit card, you’re familiar with their rewards system, which works much like the reward or cash back programs offered by many credit card companies (mine gives me money back on my car insurance). That Rewards program is now being expanded outside of their credit card customers.

As revealed on the PlayStation Blog, the new program will net you Rewards for making purchases on PSN, in the Sony store, and at other participating retailers. These Rewards can be exchanged for Sony goods, including PSN cash, Bravia TVs, and “VIP Experiences.”

Rewards members will receive one point for every dollar “spent when shopping at PlayStation Store, Sony Entertainment Network online store, and Sony Store.” By shopping through your Sony Rewards Points Plus account on Gamestop, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart online stores. Their announcement doesn’t specify what the reward rate is through these partners, but you can assume it’s less than the 1:1 rate on their own services. Additional points can also be earned by uploading “select” movie ticket stubs or registering DVD and Blu-ray purchases – presumably those from Sony Pictures Studios.

As you’d expect, Sony Reward credit card users can multiply their points by using that card on any of these other point earning purchases – such as 10 times the points on PlayStation Store purchases and 3 times the “points on PlayStation and Sony purchases at Sony Stores.”

So what can you get from your points? There are a lot of options, but the most telling is 1,000 points equating to a $10 credit on PSN. That’s a 1% return assuming you’re getting the 1:1 point:dollar rate of just buying on PSN. Doesn’t seem like much, but that’s a fairly typical rate for credit card rewards. You’ll need to really rack up the rewards if you want to exchange for games, Blu-ray players, Bravia TVs, and VIP experiences (whatever those are).

To activate this you’ll need to sign up for Sony Rewards and link it to your SEN account. If you already have a Rewards account, skip straight to linking your SEN. New enrollments before November 12, 2013 will get a bonus 100 points just for joining. Go here for more information. This is a US only offer.
