A dead server, a slight increase in information, and the collective exhalation of a million nerds. That pretty much sums up what we were left with at the end of the big Baldur’s Gate PR stunt.
What we know: The new project is called Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition. It is not an HD remake, it is a re-release that will include some of the original expansion packs, like “Tales of the Sword Coast,” and will sport new content created by some of the developers of the original game.
Trent Oster, the devious man behind this whole stunt, is a man who’s twitter feed you’re going to want to follow if you want up to the second information on this. He’s already answered a lot of questions on there–for instance, he made it clear that the team “Takes mods seriously” and said “mods both current and future are important.” Also: BGEE will run on D&D 2nd Edition Ruleset.
We’re looking at a Summer 2012 release. It’s being published exclusively on the BeamDog distribution platform, and Overhaul Games is managing the project–the same team that worked on the MDK2 HD remake. Atari and Wizards of the Coast are both onboard with the project as well.
Also their server exploded.
Now, please enjoy this adorable announcement comic from the folks at BeamDog. (The guy in armor is a BeamDog mascot.)
