A good friend of mine introduced me to Everything Is Terrible several years ago. Since then, it’s been one of my select go-to websites. In the pantheon of things that I find funny Everything is Terrible is in my top five.
Everything is Terrible hosts videos that had been spliced together from the detritus of “ephemeral video” that still circulates in thrift stores and video store cast-off bins – exercise videos, children’s programming, instructional videos, inept PSAs, crackpot religious propaganda, D-List science fiction and action movies, and so on. Sometimes the footage is remixed and distorted, sometimes it’s simply whittled down to its absurd essence. EIT certainly weren’t the first to start digging into the trash as connoisseurs of awful, stalking the VHS phantom zone rather than spools of celluloid, but they distinguish themselves with their excellent bad taste.
Tonight they bring their mind melting videos to Salt Lake City via the Legends tour. The Legends show is a culmination of the first seven years of work. Nobody could have predicted the cultural, psychological, and illuminating impact EIT would have on our collective consciousness. However, seeing all their greatest works chronicled in one place reminds us that in the right hands, one persons garbage is another persons gold. It’s time to pack up your copies and of ‘Jerry Maguire’ and head down to Brewvies. Start time is 8pm but you are going to want to get there early as I’m positive it will sell out.
