Fans of talky, topical news drama (and Sloan Sabbith) rejoice! Aaron Sorkin’s drama revolving around the fictional “Newsnight with Will McAvoy” and Atlantis Cable News Network will come back for a third, and final, season.
While it’s sad to see it go, I am, in a way, relieved. Season 2 was a little bit of a downer after an excellent first season, but we can forgive a bit of a sophomore slump. However, given the trajectory of the final episode of season 2, which felt a little like a series finale, I’m happy we’re even getting a third season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sorkin will also be bringing over Paul Lieberstein, who both acted as showrunner and played Toby the HR manager on “The Office,” to help produce the final season. No word yet on if they’ve taken Republican political consultant Frank Luntz up on his offer to help write (please, no!)
No firm airdate yet, but production will begin in the spring, based on ideas Sorkin, Lieberstein, and executive producers Alan Poul and Scott Rudin have come up with over the past few weeks.
No word yet, either, on topics of coverage, but I doubt Sorkin can shy away from covering the school shooting in Newton given his past political work talking about guns (see “The American President” and “The West Wing” for a few choice zingers). We could also see some agonizing over whether or not to cover the Rob Ford circus, the government shutdown, or other major mainstream media clusterf@#$s like coverage after the Boston Marathon bombing.
The real plotline most of us actually want resolved, though, is what has happened to Sloane and Don. Also, I think I speak for everyone in demanding we get more Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda), especially drunk/high Leona.
It’s worth noting Jeff Daniels is also currently filming “Dumb and Dumber To,” so fans of Daniels will get a double dose from opposite ends of the smarts spectrum. Will McAvoy, meet Harry Dunne.
