Deadline just broke the news that Patrick Rothfuss’s largely worshipped high fantasy epic will arrive on our television screens soon.
The Kingkiller Chronicle began with Rothfuss’s debut novel “The Name of the Wind,” and was followed in 2011 by “The Wise Man’s Fear.” The third and last novel in the series is expected next year sometime. The stories are told by Kvothe, a young innkeeper with a past. The stories are high fantasy, complete with magic, extensive mythologies, enigmatic characters and a world map that would rival Westeros (but maybe no Middle Earth). Folks who are new to fantasy by way of the Song of Ice and Fire novels would do well to pick up these novels while we wait for “Wind of Winter.”
No news yet as to network or specific creative teams, but Eric Heisserer will adapt and produce. Joining him with executive producer credits will be Arnon Milchan, Andrew Plotkin, Brad Weston and Robert Lawrence. Lawrence produced “Die Hard with a Vengeance.” I’m just saying.
I imagine most networks are scrambling for fantasy properties after witnessing three solid seasons of “Game of Thrones,” and New Regency and 20th Century Fox just nabbed the hottest commodity on the market. Congrats to Rothfuss, and we hope your books are given the treatment they deserve!
