Gigi Edgley will be the host of SyFy’s upcoming competition series “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge.” Edgley is perhaps best known for her role as Chiana in the Henson-produced series “Farscape,” a sci-fi series that ran from 1999-2003.
The Creature Shop Challenge is scheduled to air in the first quarter of 2014, and the lead judge is none other than Brian Henson, Chairman of The Henson Company, director of that beloved holiday classic “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” and son of the late genius Jim Henson. (and trivia tidbit: he’s married to Mia Sara of “Ferris Bueller” and “Legend” fame.)
One additional judge is Beth Hathaway, who has worked at Stan Winston Studio and contributed to the films “Jurassic Park,” “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” and many others. The other is Kirk Thatcher, whose long association with Henson projects includes directing the Muppet web videos “Ode to Joy” and “Muppet Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as writing and directing numerous other movies and television series.
The premise of the show is ten aspiring creators will compete for $100,000 and an opportunity to work at the Jim Henson Creature Shop. Project Runway, you are nothing to me anymore. This is the new competition series that will capture my attention. Creatures and Muppets and Henson, oh my!
Will we see the likes of the fuzzy happy Muppets so near and dear to our hearts, or the more nightmarish creations seen in “Labyrinth” and “The Dark Crystal?” Or, something not even reminiscent of what has come before?
I know I’ll be watching.
