Bungie announces Legendary Edition of Halo Reach

Bungie’s final offering in the Halo series will be released with an intense legendary edition! Listed at 149.99 many of us i’m sure are now planning on showing off our nerdy tendencies with this giant kit.

Here are the images of the collector’s edition thus far.  I’m sold for sure, this is a great looking for collectors and gamers.

CONTEST: Star Wars Art Print

 tie my fighter

We have a really cool contest for you today, from a really cool artist.

The Geekleetist has been kind enough to give us a very limited edition art print of the above image to give away to you.  There are only 5 of these in the world and one of them is ours to give to you.  They are signed and numbered and you can win one of the five.

To win is simple.

Get on your facebook and/or your twitter  (you can double your chances if you do both)  and tell people why Big Shiny Robot! is your favorite source for nerd news and reviews and set them up with a link here.  You can post this up on a forum you frequent, or comment on a site about it for more chances to win.  (And do it in ways that are applicable, don’t spam people.  You’ll be disqualified if you do that.)

And, like always, comment back here when the deed is done.  (And send us links to where you’ve done it when possible.)

We’re going to do the contest for three days, so the more places you can spread the word, the more chances you have to win this really cool print.  I have one myself and they are very good looking. You should be following The Geekleetist on Twitter.  And if you want to buy any other prints of his, check out his etsy page.

(And since it’s Star Wars related, I’ll be cross posting this over at my Star Wars Examiner page, be sure to hit that up as well.)

So man your ships, and may the Force be with you.

Marvel vs. Capcom Teaser Trailer!

It’s been 10 long years since Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but here it is folks:

Marvel has announced that Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds will be hitting Xbox 360 and PS3 in Spring 2011… I know, seems like forever!

Revealed last week in Hawaii at Capcom’s annual, super-exclusive and semi-secret Captivate event, “Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds” pits roughly 30 characters from across the Marvel and Capcom universes in the most epic fighting game of all time. Building upon the foundation laid by the previous Marvel/Capcom games, “MvC3” features a fighting system that takes elements from those previous titles as well as Capcom’s recent brawler “Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.” Additionally, the series makes the jump into 3D with graphics similar in style to those seen in “Street Fighter IV,” though with a more striking comic book feel.

The diverse roster of characters and locations has not been fully revealed yet, but the initial list of playable fighters includes Wolverine, Hulk and Iron Man from the Marvel side, plus Ryu, Morrigan and Chris Redfield from team Capcom. Producer Ryota Niitsuma and Capcom are working feverishly to get as many characters into the game and plan to have roughly 30 in the game when it smashes onto consoles next year. With 10 years between titles, new characters have come to the fore for both Marvel and Capcom, so expect the roster to include brawlers both classic and brand new to the series.

You can check out the full story at the link above as well as check out a limited art gallery of some of the announced characters.

Star Wars Live Action Series in 2011?

One of the big pieces of “news” coming out of the C2E2 convention in Chicago this weekend was that Steve Sansweet confirmed that Lucasfilm is working on a Blu-ray Ultimate Box-Set of Star Wars.

It’s amazing how this news spreads like wildfire, even though I originally reported it (with the exact same source and much more substantive details) back in July of 2009.  You can read that full article and check out the full interview here, but here’s an excerpt from the story last year:

Q: Is there any talk whatsoever, and I’m not even going to ask for a date because I know that’s ridiculous, but is there any talk about the Star Wars movies on a high definition format?

A: Yeah.  I mean obviously we’ve been looking at that for a couple of years and I think one of the questions is when is the market penetration there and these days, will there be a market penetration before everything goes streaming? But we’ve been looking at an ultimate box set of the Star Wars movies, all six of the movies.  And what special features would be.  And clearly these days, if you did an ultimate box set and didn’t do it in HD, Blu-ray, it just wouldn’t make any sense.  So now it’s a matter of thinking okay, we’ve been thinking about this for a while, we know what kind of assets we want to use, we’ve done some work in cleaning up things, it’s really a matter of making that decision of when’s the best time to release it.

Do you wait and have an event because you’re working off of the fact that there’s going to be a new live action TV series?

All those things are very much in motion.  I can say with pretty good confidence that at some point in the next several years there will be a complete set of Star Wars movies and lots of extras and deleted footage and anything anyone could want.  Although I say that with some trepidation now because our fans want everything, “Why the Holiday Special wasn’t on there, you ruined my life!”

But in the next few years there will be an ultimate box set and certainly a Blu-ray set.

Q: That leads into my next question.  Over the years, there have been a lot of making of documentaries.  In my day job, actually, I’m a documentary filmmaker and the Star Wars behind the scenes documentaries are what prompted a lot of that, like From StarWars to Jedi and The Making of Star Wars and I’ve got all my old VHS copies sitting around.  Are we going to see any digital releases of those either on DVD or Blu-ray?  Is that even in the cards?

A: I hope so.  Because I agree with you.  Those have not been seen by the current generation of Star Wars fans and I think they hold up well for having been done at a certain time and certainly they are on the list for assets to be considered for an ultimate box set.

It doesn’t sound like very much has changed since then. As far as the release date, Sansweet pretty heavily insinuated then that the release might be tied to the release of the new live action series. Rumours of the live action show have it starting on TV in 2011 or 2012.

Now Digital Bits is reporting that they have inside information that places the release of the Blu-rays in October 2011.

But if current plans remain unchanged, our sources say you’ll be enjoying The Force in 1080p next October.

October 2011 coincides with the beginning of the television season for the 2011-2012 year.

Sansweet seemed pretty sure when I talked to him that the release would be wisest for Lucasfilm when they could tie it to an event and insinuated heavily that it was the Live-Action series. I know it’s a stretch, but reading the tea-leaves here, could this mean we get the Live-Action show in 2011? Or could this be tied to one of the animated shows that have been announced? Anything is possible, but if you connect the dots here, I think I have a pretty compelling, well-reasoned case that if the source of Digital Bits is accurate, we could be looking at the Live-Action series in October 2011.

In Memoriam: Carl Macek

It’s been reported that at the age of 58, Carl Macek, the producer and story editor of the American version of Robotech, suffered a fatal heart attack on April 17, 2010.

Macek has had quite an impressive list of accomplishments, aside from Robotech, his company, Streamline Studios, imported and dubbed some of the most influential anime from the 1980s and 1990s, including Akira, Miyazaki’s Lupin the III and Laputa, and Wicked City.  He was also the first to produce and English Language dub of Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totorro, which still stands superior over the more recent Disney dub.

I can honestly say that without Macek, I would have no knowledge or interest in anime whatsoever.  But Robotech brought me in, he introduced the United States to Miyazaki and Akira and helped to create a culture here, for better or for worse.  And I’m grateful to him for it.  His work on Robotech is some of the best, most innovative, and fun storytelling I’ve witnessed.  Anime has largely passed me by in the last 20 years, but Robotech and Akira and the Miyazaki movies have been my mainstay that I revisit often.  And such is my love for Robotech that my daughter’s middle name is Miriya.

I’d always held out hope that we’d get a big screen Robotech movie and Macek would be involved, but alas, it doesn’t seem as though that dream was meant to be.

INTERVIEW: Mark Millar

Mark Millar has written some of the most popular, best-selling comic books in the last decade.  From Ultimates and Civil War to Old Man Logan and Enemy of the State, Mark Millar has redefined classic characters and relationships of those favorites for a new generation of readers.

When he started work with John Romita, Jr. on Kick-Ass, his own creator-owned book, he had no idea people would latch on to it as much as they have.  In fact, sales of the hardcover Kick-Ass trade (available here on Amazon) just crossed the 100,000 sales mark, which is in incredibly impressive in today’s comic market.

Clang! Boom! Steam! and I got the chance to speak to him about Kick-Ass, among other things.  He told us about the genesis of Dave Lizewski, Hit-Girl and Big Daddy, and the differences between the film and the comic-book.  We also talked about his infamous eye-whiskey escapades in Chicago and we talked about the future of the Ultimate Avengers line.  (You can read about that part of the conversation here.)

We talked a lot about influences and Stan Lee and a dozen other things.

To listen to the full conversation, click on the link to our iTunes feed here.  There are tons of cool interviews and the podcast on that feed, so you’d be wise to rate and subscribe to it.

To listen to yesterdays interview with John Romita, Jr., click here.

In the interview, we talked a little bit about the Kick-Ass movie book, it’s available from Titan and you can pick up a copy on Amazon here.

Titan has also been good enough to provide us with a copy to give away to you guys that’s part of the grand prize Kick-Ass contest ending Friday. There will be a full review of the book later in the week as part of our countdown to Kick-Ass!

Kick-Ass is published by Marvel in the US and Titan Books in the UK

Whedon To Direct Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’!

 josswhedonavengers

Mike Fleming from Deadline.com is reporting that he’s been “told” that Marvel studios is in final negotiations to give the reigns of the The Avengers movie to fanboy favorite, Joss Whedon.

I’m told Marvel Studios is in final negotiations for Buffy the Vampire Slayer series architect Joss Whedon to direct Marvel Studios’ The Avengers… Whedon has been rumored for this job for awhile, and is high on the fanboy wish-list. He’s an interesting choice: despite his writing/producing TV series resume, his lone feature directing effort, Serenity, was not a hit.

Of course, Whedon is no stranger to comic books having an extended run as writer for Astonishing X-Men from 2008 – 2009, as well as the popular Runaways among others. Frankly, I loved Serenity and while I was never a huge Buffy fan I thought Whedon’s work on Astonishing X-Men was really good – I mean, the man brought back Colossus! If in fact this job goes to Whedon I think it will be a good fit; it would be a good case of a director getting to direct a superhero film he is personally attached to.

Of course, we will keep an eye on this and let you know as soon as we get some confirmation…

UPDATED: Brandon Routh Cast in Walking Dead?

 routhWD

As soon as we hit the “Publish” button here on this story, the official Brandon Routh website debunked this rumor:

I can exclusively debunk this rumor- Brandon is not joining the cast of “The Walking Dead.”

So, there you have it! Though, we shouldn’t be too surprised because I think the count now for Bloody Disgusting making accurate predictions on “Walking Dead” casting is 0/3. Either way though, sure would have been interesting to see!

ORIGINAL STORY:
Bloody Disgusting
-while being super light on details- is reporting that Routh is “locked in” for a role in the “Walking Dead” television series being shot for AMC. With the two male leads already cast (Andrew Lincoln stars as Rick Grimes, along with Jon Bernthal) it’s anybody’s guess as to who Routh may be playing -perhaps Carl as Kill-Tacular-Tron smartassly suggested… It could also very well be a new role not in the acclaimed comic series created to serve a specific purpose in the TV adaptation. At this point, it’s anybody’s guess, but I doubt we will have to wait long to get a confirmation on this and find out what role he has been cast in.

I might be one of only twelve people to watch and enjoy the show “Chuck” on NBC. Routh just finished up an extended guest spot as a spy who is ridiculously good at his job and eventually loses his shit because the US Government had his wife killed several years back. When I saw the first episode he was in my first thought was, “Wow, from Superman to spy on a network television series. Tough break.” But as the story arc went on, I really enjoyed him as an addition to the cast; He played a badass really well and when he loses his mind and starts trying to kill everybody, he got even better. I liked Routh as Superman, I thought he did very well in the role, but for some reason (and I know it wasn’t the writing for “Chuck”) I thought he was better in this role on a TV series. My point is, if Routh has indeed been cast in “Walking Dead” I hope it’s a regular role because he seems to really be in his element on a television set.

Any ideas who Routh may be playing if he has indeed been cast?
