Marvel Comics leaves Diamond Comics Distributors

The Beat reports:

Starting in September, Marvel will have a new distributor to the book trade, Hachette. Marvel was previously distributed by Diamond Book Distributors; Diamond Comics Distributors will continue to distribute Marvel periodicals and books to the comic shop market.

Obviously, their loss could have a major repercussions on Diamond Book Distribution; however, DBD VP of Sales and Marketing Kuo-yu Liang says it will survive the loss with other strong products. “Obviously this is a big loss and we are losing our biggest client, but DBD is still going to be very strong,” he told The Beat. “We still have 50 clients, and recently resigned contracts with Image and IDW. There is no plan to cut back. Even without Marvel, we’re going to have a very strong list.” He mentioned Oni’s Scott Pilgrim and the Walking Dead at Image as series that are poised for big years due to media tie-ins.

Now, I know this is gonna be a pretty big hit to Diamond, whether they’ll admit it or not.  But with Marvel’s recent merging with Disney, and the recent string of Blockbuster films, its books are in a perfect position to be distributed to the masses like they haven’t been in years.  Now, I know comics have been reappearing in the places I used to find them as a kid; grocery store checkouts, magazine stands, and more, but maybe Marvel feels Hachette can provide a better service.

Or maybe Marvel knows Diamond sucks balls.

I know that as an independent creator, Diamond has denied shipping requests of my book to comic book stores even if they have copies in their warehouse, and other series/graphic novels with lower selling numbers have received similar treatment…with some books being denied inclusion in their monthly catalogs altogether.  Who knows, maybe with Marvel leaving, Diamond will stop acting like a monopoly and start acting like a comics distributor.

Let’s all weigh in on this, boys and girls.

UPDATE: Marvel Comics sent out an official release:

Marvel is pleased to announce that, effective September 1, 2010, Marvel books will be sold and distributed into the worldwide book market by the Hachette Book Group. Additionally, Marvel is also pleased to announce an agreement with Diamond Comics Distributor to extend its exclusive Direct Market Service Agreement.

“Teaming with Hachette allows us to even more aggressively grow our presence in the book market, exposing new readers to Marvel’s great library of characters and stories. With Hachette’s overwhelming success in the book market, we can’t imagine a better partner as Marvel looks to expand its presence in the book market” said David Gabriel, Marvel Senior Vice President of Sales & Circulation.

Ken Michaels, Hachette COO said “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Marvel. Hachette’s world-class distribution and broad sales reach, combined with Marvel’s outstanding brand and product line, is sure to be a powerful combination.”

Additionally, Marvel will extend its relationship with Diamond, continuing its commitment to comic shops worldwide. Gabriel explained, “Diamond Book Distributors has been very instrumental in the growth of our graphic novel business, nearly tripling our sales in the book market over the last five years, and we thank them for their efforts. The decision to switch book market distributors was a very difficult one but as evidenced by the extension of our Direct Market agreement, our working relationship with Diamond remains very close. We remain extremely appreciative of our Direct Market retailers and continue to grow that vital market.”

CONTEST: Kick-Ass!

 kick-ass-poster-paint

We’re going to have some Kick-Ass giveaways all week on our Facebook page and via our Twitter, but we’re kicking off the grand prize contest here and now.

For the grand prize we have a whole slew of stuff:

  • The Book: Kick-Ass: Creating the Comic, Making the Movie (courtesy of Titan Books)
  • An embroidered Kick-Ass Ball Cap
  • A Kick-Ass T-Shirt
  • A Kick-Ass cock and balls insignia Key-chain with attached permanent marker
  • Kick-Ass Lenticular mini-poster
  • 2 Big Shiny Robot stickers and a commemorative 2nd Anniversary BSR! poster

What do you need to do to win all this stuff?  It’s pretty simple.  All you need to do is create a superhero identity for facebook.  Go to www.IWillKickAss.com and use their superhero creator to create  a superhero (or make your own from scratch) and create a facebook fan page.  The contest ends on April 15th at midnight and the superhero with the most fans (and has driven the most fans to add Kick-Ass and Big Shiny Robot! to their facebook) will win the grandprize!

Be sure to advertise your fan page everywhere you can (and be sure to mention that it’s a Kick-Ass contest sponsored by Big Shiny Robot!) and let us know about it.  Comment here with links to your fan pages and we’ll keep an eye on them and feature some of them.

We’ll still be giving away shirts and hats and posters over the course of the next week, so be sure to add us on facebook and twitter to find out how you can win.

Kick-Ass opens in theatres across the United States on April 16th, and you pretty much have to go see it immediately.

Mandy McMurray Interview On Gavin’s Underground

Yes, that is correct, women comic book writers… they do exist! Mandy McMurray has written for both Marvel and DC, as well as indie publishers Angel and Aspen. Currently she’s working on her own series while penning COTA: Children Of The Apocalypse for Angel. Today she sat down with Gavin at City Weekly to chat about her career and thoughts on comics both local and national.

Gavin’s Underground interview with Mandy McMurray

Gavin: How did the opportunity come about to work for DC?

Mandy: Joe Benitez and his ornery streak! For a couple of years I went to SDCC and never saw or heard of anyone from DC so I started cracking jokes about DC being run by robots. Joe laughed and told me his editor was standing right behind us. Then he shoved me into him with his foot and I was face to face with a real life, living breathing editor from DC. I choked, and Eddie Berganza thought it was some sort of joke Joe was playing on him. After the initial shock wore off, I set up a time to meet with him the next day, ran back to my hotel room at 3AM and wrote a Teen Titans sample script. I think Eddie took pity on me when he saw the dark circles the next day and actually sat down and read it.

Gavin: You also work with Angel and Aspen comics. How does it differ for you working with major and indie companies?

Mandy: I always wanted to work with Michael (Turner), so when the opportunity to work with him came up, I was thrilled. Then Michael got sick again and I was heartbroken. When he died I knew that working on Sonia’s story in Aspen Seasons was the best way I could honor his life. I got to add a little piece of the mythology to Michael’s dream. Working with indie companies in general is very different from the major companies. Their audiences expect different things and you’re usually only dealing with a couple of people so decisions are easier to make as a team. Obviously, most indie companies don’t work on the same budget as the big ones either so you really work on them because you love them, not because they pay the best rates. You also have some freedom in an indie company. You don’t have to pass off the story with four different departments and wait for approval which can be frustrating.

Marvel Comics Debut on the iPad!

 MarvelComicsApp_01

Marvel announced today that more than 500 comics will be available for the iPad with the launch of their first AP through iTunes.

The best news comes most of the way into the press release when they say that I can use this Ap on my iPhone. Though it does make me want to get an iPad even more.

This is a real game-changer in the world of Digital Comics. Now all they need to do to make it perfect is sell a version of it that’s tied to your Marvel Digital selection so you don’t have to pay $1.99 per book. If you pay for the book though, I imagine iTunes will store it on your iPad or iPhone or iTunes or whatever, and I think that means you can keep that digital copy of that book. That’s also a great big step for Marvel. So, this certainly has it’s pros and cons.

More details here:

New York, N.Y. – April 2, 2010 – Marvel Entertainment is proud to announce the launch of the Marvel Comics App for iPad on the App Store. This landmark app launches with over 500 of Marvel’s greatest comic books, from classic stories to modern tales, featuring Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor and more of the world’s most popular Super Heroes. The Marvel Comics App brings the world of Marvel to iPad owners with each comic presented at incredibly high resolution possible on iPad’s full color screen, a user-friendly search engine, innovative viewing options and more.

“We’re excited to introduce an unparalleled digital comic experience to our fans with the Marvel Comics App for iPad,” said Dan Buckley, publisher & CEO, Marvel Publishing. “The iPad is the first device that offers us a chance to present digital comics that are even close to replicating the experience of reading a print comic. This new world of digital comics distribution provides us great opportunities to reach new readers, allow consumers to sample our diverse stories and characters, and we believe it will drive these new fans into the App Store and local comic shops each week to find even more.”

Fans will be granted unrivaled access to Marvel’s rich library of comics, with launch titles ranging from the first appearances of characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men to modern classics like the debut of Red Hulk, Jonathan Hickman’s acclaimed Fantastic Four run, Joss Whedon & John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men and lots more. Every comic available through the Marvel Comics App is optimized for the iPad through painstaking re-coloring and re-digitizing of select content.

Marvel worked with ComiXology to create the perfect app for new readers, offering the option to preview three pages from each available comic before purchasing and a cutting edge recommendation engine for every fan to find a comic they’re sure to love. The app also arms fans with a handy comic shop locator, allowing them to find their local retailer’s address and phone number and then journey even further into the Marvel Universe. To further enhance the mobile reading experience on the iPad, the Marvel Comics App features multiple viewing modes, taking readers panel-by-panel through the comic book in a smooth, action-packed progression using just the swipe of a finger.

The Marvel Comics App for iPad is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore/. Individual comics are priced at just $1.99 each with new content arriving every week.

To commemorate this historic event, Marvel is offering select titles free for a limited time, such as New Avengers #1, which launched a new era for super hero comics; Captain America #1, Invincible Iron Man #1 & Thor #1, the perfect place for new readers to discover the titular heroes; and Super Hero Squad #1, suited for fans of all ages, especially our youngest ones.

The Marvel Comics App is also available for iPhone and iPod touch. For all the details on Marvel’s historic announcement and a closer look at the Marvel Comics App, please visit www.marvel.com/iPad.

Fantastic Four #577

Ok so Hickman has been writing FF for 8 issues now and has made it without a doubt one of the best and most fun books Marvel has to offer! In his short time on this book he has turned from a title I’ve always been kinda meh on, even though I love the characters, and has made it one of the books I anticipate the most every month from Marvel.

And here is the list of everything else coming out this week!

This Week IN Comics

This week we get a little bit political, looking at Glenn Beck’s analog in Marvel comics.

You can read the online version here.

If you’re in the Salt Lake or Park City areas, you can pick up a copy of IN magazine off the ubiquitous street newsracks. Otherwise, you can see the full laid out version below.

The Marvels Project #7

This series has been one of the best mini series I’ve read in quite some time, but it seems there has hardly been any mention of it. This series is the retelling of the origins of the Marvel Universe. Set in the 40’s we see what led up to the creation of Captain America, Prince Namor first taking his agressions out on the surface, the Invaders, young Nick Fury, and so much more that led to what the Marvel Universe had become today. Excellently written by Ed Brubaker, stunningly drawn by Steve Epting, and beautifully colored by Dave Stewart you definitely should be reading this! And if you can’t find the back issues I highly suggest you should pick up the collected version when Marvel releases it!

Ok those are my two big picks for the week, now on to the list of everything else that came out! And remember if you live in the Salt Lake City everything on this list can be found or ordered at Dr Volts Comics!

REVIEW: Goin’ Out West with NEMESIS

One of the first things that struck me about Millar/McNiven’s Nemesis, was what a great character to throw into the whole “who would win in a fight between x and y” arena. One of Comic book fans greatest pleasures for sure.

Anyway…

The latest of a string or creator owned books from the twisted brain of Mark Millar, Nemesis conjures images of “The Most Dangerous Game” thrown in with a classic Western, pitting a sadistic drifter against gritty lawmen who are tougher than leather and smarter than God while normal folks watch helplessly in terror. In the case of Nemesis, he drifts from Tokyo to Washington D.C. with malicious intent toward her (not super) heroic Police Chief Morrow.

Clad in a pristine, hornless white cape and cowl, it is clear right off the bat that even though we’ve never met this character, NEMESIS is Batman’s polar opposite, morally, philosophically and tactically. While Batman operated from the shadows to bring down the worst kind of scum the world has to offer, Nemesis makes a spectacle of taking down prominent police chiefs around the globe for sport while greedily commanding the worlds spotlight. Well equipped, well funded, a tactical genius and a complete psychopath to boot, Nemesis is most simply put, Batman behaving like the joker. Scary to think about, scary to watch but darkly exhilarating all the same. The world’s only super-villain going up against a flesh and blood man of the law. It would be like the joker setting his sights on Chief Gordon without Batman there to do anything about it.

Thankfully, Millar does not seem inclined on letting up on his creator owned works, and similarly to Robert Kirkman seems determined to inject the industry with new  blood (by the gallons) and characters – and if Kick-Ass and Nemesis are any indicator’s, I say let it pour. These books are created at high risk to both writer and artist who seen no money at all unless the book sells really well, and without a marketing budget of any kind, these endeavors are very much a leap of faith with no one but you and I standing there to catch them.

What I liked most about Nemesis is the lack of expectations that come with a brand new character and universe, the unpredictability that it often so hard to come by in the established world of mainstream comics. I love the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic 4 and all the others and I sincerely hope they’re still around for me to read while I’m pooping my pants in a convalescent home some day but familiarity can only do so much for you – something new and exciting is… well, new and exciting.

Lets keep these fresh stories coming.

Chris Evans Accepts the Part of Captain America

There you have it. Though anything can still go wrong, The Hollywood Reporter has gone on the record saying that Chris Evans will don the winged helmet of Captain America in the film set to be released next year.

If it turns out that this works, I’ll be happy.

Evans is old enough to be able to age up to play the venerated hero we all know and love, but young enough to play down the age so he can be a skinny geek fresh from the draft.
