Marvel Studios to Shrink its Scope

marvel_studios_logo_superCHUD is reporting exclusively that Marvel has decided to start making some smaller super-hero movies on lower budgets and have been having meetings with writers and directors. These would be small movies for their lower tier characters like Dr. Strange, Luke Cage, The Dazzler, and so on. According to CHUD, Power Pack is on the list, which could be interesting as a kids property.

Anyhow, I think this is a great step forward for Marvel. At the point where they have the biggest super-hero franchises in the world and they’re making they’re way to the big screen currently, why not diversify with some smaller investments and get some of the well-loved but lesser known characters out there? I think Marvel has branded themselves and their studio well enough that they could draw a good opening weekend audience in for a Dr. Strange film, or a Luke Cage film…

Personally, I’d love to see a Moon Knight film. A lower budget, gritty, much more psychological take on the Batman sort of archetype. I mean, honestly, Marc Spector is as crazy as a bedbug with all his multiple personalities and the guy was a mercenary. I think you could make him movie pretty efficiently with this model.

The price tag for these films, according to CHUD, is the $20-40 million range, which is right around where Kick-Ass was. My guess is they realize that if they make 4 of these, and even if only one of them is a runaway hit, they’ve still made all their money back plus some.

It’s good business for Marvel, and exciting news for us fans.

What second-class Marvel Superhero’s movie would you like to see flying under this banner?

Marvel vs. Capcom Teaser Trailer!

It’s been 10 long years since Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but here it is folks:

Marvel has announced that Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds will be hitting Xbox 360 and PS3 in Spring 2011… I know, seems like forever!

Revealed last week in Hawaii at Capcom’s annual, super-exclusive and semi-secret Captivate event, “Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds” pits roughly 30 characters from across the Marvel and Capcom universes in the most epic fighting game of all time. Building upon the foundation laid by the previous Marvel/Capcom games, “MvC3” features a fighting system that takes elements from those previous titles as well as Capcom’s recent brawler “Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.” Additionally, the series makes the jump into 3D with graphics similar in style to those seen in “Street Fighter IV,” though with a more striking comic book feel.

The diverse roster of characters and locations has not been fully revealed yet, but the initial list of playable fighters includes Wolverine, Hulk and Iron Man from the Marvel side, plus Ryu, Morrigan and Chris Redfield from team Capcom. Producer Ryota Niitsuma and Capcom are working feverishly to get as many characters into the game and plan to have roughly 30 in the game when it smashes onto consoles next year. With 10 years between titles, new characters have come to the fore for both Marvel and Capcom, so expect the roster to include brawlers both classic and brand new to the series.

You can check out the full story at the link above as well as check out a limited art gallery of some of the announced characters.

Updated:How Did Kick-Ass do?

On its opening weekend in the US Kick-Ass made $19.8 Million and took second place for the weekend. It came in behind How To Train Your Dragon (which came out 4 weeks ago) but placed above Date Night and Death At A Funeral. All in all pretty good considering that Rated R superhero movies don’t often do well. We robots have been saying from the start that this movie is going to make it on word of mouth so make sure you go out and get people to see this movie. And if you need some reasons why read this article from Steve Zeitchik at the LA Times. He gives a lot of good reasons as to why this movie didn’t have a great opening we would like to see but that its still doing strong. If you’ve listened to the most recent podcast I tried to make some points about marketing etc but I was no where near as coherent and articulate as Mr. Zeitchik. So give it a read and tell your friends to see the damn movie.

UPDATE: Kick-Ass actually took the #1 spot. $19.8 Million compared to Dragons $19.6 (source)

This Week IN Comics

If you couldn’t tell, it’s really important to me that you go see Kick-Ass this week.  I saw the film last night and am about to see it again (We’ll be roundtable reviewing it with all the robots in a day or two), but it’s just a great film.

As you’re aware, this is from our weekly column at IN Magazine, one of the alternative newsweeklies in Salt Lake City.  If you’re in the area, pick up a copy on newsstands now.

You can click here to read the online version, or you can click on the image below to read the laid out, visual version.  In any case, the fact of the matter is that you should be seeing Kick-Ass this week.

Why You Have to See Kick-Ass This Weekend

This article first appeared here in The Huffington Post.

How many of you wanted to dress up as super-heroes and kick some ass as a kid? Hell, I still want to as an adult. Sure, I’m a pacifist and probably wouldn’t hurt a fly, but the fact remains that I’ve fantasized plenty about putting on a costume and taking it to the criminal underworld. My guess is that anyone who’s read a comic book or watched a comic book movie has had this inclination. But one comic book I’ve read made me feel like that more than any other: Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.’s Kick-Ass.

It tells the story of Dave Lizewski, a teenager just like any other, only more so. He lives in our world, the real world, with comic books and consequences for ridiculous behavior, but that doesn’t stop him from buying a wetsuit on eBay and taking to the streets to fight crime.

Sure, he gets his ass kicked and a knife in his gut and a long convalescence in the hospital to show for it, but it was a hell of a rush. As soon as he mended, he went out again, but this time he did the ass-kicking and some kids captured the action on a cell-phone camera. One quick upload to YouTube later and the story is set for some of the most outrageous, bloody fun you’ve ever seen in a comic book.

The great thing about the book was that it was made with no compromises. Since no publisher was involved and Millar and Romita were working for free, they could do what they want.

Then Matthew Vaughn stepped in. He’s the director of the film (and also Layer Cake and Stardust). He swooped in, bought the option with his own money with the intention of making Kick-Ass his next movie. The only problem was that no studio would touch the film. You see, one of the heroes that sprouts into the limelight after Kick-Ass reaches the height of popularity is Hit-Girl. She’s 11, swears like a sailor, and kills more people more gruesomely than The Bride in Kill Bill. (She was trained by her father, Big Daddy, an ex-cop with a brutal sense of justice played in the film by Nicolas Cage.)

Since no studio would finance it, Vaughn put his money where his mouth was and financed the whole thing entirely between him and some friends. And so the movie was made with the same carefree, no compromises attitude as the comic.

The result is the film that comes out on Friday, but it seems as though people have never heard of it.

I have so much enthusiasm for the story and the film, I want to ask you to go see it to be a true patron of the arts and independent cinema.

And it needs all the help it can get. It’s rated R, it’s independent, and based on an independent comic book. If you don’t support this movie, how many more R-rated comic book movies do you think we’ll see?

Trust me in advance, the word of mouth on this movie is going to be huge, but unless there’s a strong showing opening weekend, there won’t be anywhere to go see it on the second weekend. And as soon as we get into May, forget about it. At that point, Iron Man 2 takes over the world.

Do yourself (and the creators) a favor and check it out. Go to your local comic book store and pick up the graphic novel (or get it on Amazon). Then watch the trailer to the film. And then buy yourself a ticket for the movie.

And if you’re still interested, I did interviews with the creators for Big Shiny Robot! Mark Millar andJohn Romita, Jr. were kind enough to talk to me about the book and the movie, and the time Mark Millar tried to imbibe whiskey through his ocular cavity…

In any case, I hope to see you at the movies this weekend!

INTERVIEW: Mark Millar

Mark Millar has written some of the most popular, best-selling comic books in the last decade.  From Ultimates and Civil War to Old Man Logan and Enemy of the State, Mark Millar has redefined classic characters and relationships of those favorites for a new generation of readers.

When he started work with John Romita, Jr. on Kick-Ass, his own creator-owned book, he had no idea people would latch on to it as much as they have.  In fact, sales of the hardcover Kick-Ass trade (available here on Amazon) just crossed the 100,000 sales mark, which is in incredibly impressive in today’s comic market.

Clang! Boom! Steam! and I got the chance to speak to him about Kick-Ass, among other things.  He told us about the genesis of Dave Lizewski, Hit-Girl and Big Daddy, and the differences between the film and the comic-book.  We also talked about his infamous eye-whiskey escapades in Chicago and we talked about the future of the Ultimate Avengers line.  (You can read about that part of the conversation here.)

We talked a lot about influences and Stan Lee and a dozen other things.

To listen to the full conversation, click on the link to our iTunes feed here.  There are tons of cool interviews and the podcast on that feed, so you’d be wise to rate and subscribe to it.

To listen to yesterdays interview with John Romita, Jr., click here.

In the interview, we talked a little bit about the Kick-Ass movie book, it’s available from Titan and you can pick up a copy on Amazon here.

Titan has also been good enough to provide us with a copy to give away to you guys that’s part of the grand prize Kick-Ass contest ending Friday. There will be a full review of the book later in the week as part of our countdown to Kick-Ass!

Kick-Ass is published by Marvel in the US and Titan Books in the UK

Whedon To Direct Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’!

 josswhedonavengers

Mike Fleming from Deadline.com is reporting that he’s been “told” that Marvel studios is in final negotiations to give the reigns of the The Avengers movie to fanboy favorite, Joss Whedon.

I’m told Marvel Studios is in final negotiations for Buffy the Vampire Slayer series architect Joss Whedon to direct Marvel Studios’ The Avengers… Whedon has been rumored for this job for awhile, and is high on the fanboy wish-list. He’s an interesting choice: despite his writing/producing TV series resume, his lone feature directing effort, Serenity, was not a hit.

Of course, Whedon is no stranger to comic books having an extended run as writer for Astonishing X-Men from 2008 – 2009, as well as the popular Runaways among others. Frankly, I loved Serenity and while I was never a huge Buffy fan I thought Whedon’s work on Astonishing X-Men was really good – I mean, the man brought back Colossus! If in fact this job goes to Whedon I think it will be a good fit; it would be a good case of a director getting to direct a superhero film he is personally attached to.

Of course, we will keep an eye on this and let you know as soon as we get some confirmation…
