Hey all sorry the list is a little late this week. Marvel seems to have dominated my picks this week which is unusual because I’m primarily a DC guy. However having read both of my picks I stand by my decision! As usual the shipping list is below my picks and is brought to you by Dr Volts Comics in Salt Lake City. X-Men #1 by Victor Gischler and Paco Medina

I’ll admit, when I first heard about a brand new X-Men series starting with vampires I rolled my eyes and said “Really?”. What was the point of a new X-Men series? Why did it seem like Marvel was jumping on the vampire bandwagon? Well after reading this issue my preconceptions were wrong. This was a fun read that made the vampires a dangerous threat. We see just the tip of the vampires plan and a former X-Man gets “infected.” It also helps that Paco Medina just kills it on the art on this issue. If you were like me and weren’t interested for the same reasons I was, quit yer bitchin and try it!

Shadowland #1 by Andy Diggle and Billy Tan

Daredevil has been annoying me lately. Not the story, but the rate at which the series has been coming out. It seems like Daredevil has been coming out bi-monthly since Dark Reign started. Well y’know what? The wait was worth it! Daredevil’s fortress in Hell’s Kitchen is complete and he’s using the hand as his own personal vigilante squad! The Avengers offer him help and… Well… Just pick up the book and find out! DD also squares off against one of his oldest foes and the result was shocking! My love for Daredevil has been reinvigorated and I can’t wait for the next part! If you like the marvel street level superheroes then you are going to want to be reading this!

On to the Reviews!

This week, I took in several books, some of them just randomly, others because I was interested or had been reading them. First:

Amazing Spiderman #636

Man, I am out of the continuity on Spiderman. But, I guess, Kraven is back. As in resurrected. And it looks like Spidey is dead, nailed to the wall like some garish cross between a crucifix and a hunting trophy.  Spiderman as Jesus? I guess so. Meanwhile, animals have escaped from the Central Park zoo and are going crazy, Spiderman’s cohorts are locked up and in danger, and Madam Web is having visions. It reminds me of why I hated the clone saga.  But this isn’t that terrible.  In fact, the art is dark and brooding, and so if you’re into that, rather than the colorful Ultimate Spiderman, well, you’re in luck. Very Frank Miller Batman-esque.

Story:  3 stars

Art:  3 stars

Ability to step in if you haven’t been reading this book faithfully:  1 star

Recommendation: Maybe I need to pick up the previous two books in the continuity to fully get it, but this is good.  Or just go read the trade paperback of Kraven’s Last Hunt?

Hawkeye & Mockingbird #2

Our favorite crimefighting Avenger couple is at it again. In this issue, we delve into Mockingbird’s past and her family, and the noose tightens as Crossfire and the Spirit of Vengeance come closer to exacting their revenge.

I thought it was a little plodding and soap opera drama for most of the book– more like an episode of The Gilmore Girls than a comic book… until the final pages.  And OMG….. the best thing you can say of a comic is it made you want to read the next one.  Sold.

Story: 2 1/2 stars

Dialogue: 2 stars

Art: 2 stars

Cliffhanger? 3 stars!!!!

Recommendation: If you like these characters, buy it.  But you are already, aren’t you?

MY PICK FOR THE WEEK:

Avengers: The Children’s Crusade

I loved the Young Avengers. Great concept. Great team. Great characters. A team of Avengers who are teens with awesome powers that mirror current and former avengers, and most with superhero parents and grandparents. And yet each is an individual character with real heart and emotions– not just powers on top of some facade. I also loved that they took the risk of making some of the characters gay. I know that can be seen as a little gimmicky, but it always just seemed to work in the context of this book. Just great.

And so, when in Avengers #1 at the beginning of the new Heroic Age (last month), Kang the Conquerer announces that the children of the Avengers will cause the end of the world… immediately I think of the Young Avengers.

And so, in this book, Cap, Iron Man, and Ms. Marvel show up to intercept Wiccan, a teen with all the powers of the Scarlet Witch. They’re concerned his powers are becoming out of control, especially after he takes down an entire team of nuclear-armed terrorists and doesn’t even remember doing it. Remember, it was the power of the Scarlet Witch that Disassembled the Avengers in Avengers: Disassembled. It was Scarlet Witch in House of M who caused the death of thousands of mutants and loss of powers for countless more. So, could Wiccan be on this same path?

Beyond the awesome subject matter, this is the best art of any book this week.  Hands. Down.

Dialogue: 3 stars

Insertion of gay subplot: 3 1/2 stars (yay for gay superheroes!)

Art: 4 stars

Reccomendation: PICK THIS UP. IF IT IS THE ONLY MARVEL COMIC YOU GET THIS WEEK, GET THIS BOOK.

Tales of the Pet Avengers: The Dogs of Summer #1

Oh come on, you know you want to pick this up.  It’s just so cuddly and wuvable!  Franklin Richards and his time-traveling puppy! And hijinks ensue!

Use of pets in a comic:  3 stars

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

Other Recommendation for the week:

We don’t always get to choose what books Marvel chooses to share with us in advance to review, but I have to pimp a book I haven’t yet read just based on reputation alone. I would’ve liked to have read Wolverine Origins #50 or the new X-men (it’s gots vampires! how trendy!) to bring you firsthand reviews of those, but there is one comic I can heartily recommend even having not read word one of it:

SCARLET #1

I love Brian Michael Bendis’s work. Alias/The Pulse were some of my favorites when they ran.  Same with Powers. I’m hoping for great things from this comic. I will be picking this up, and the only reason you shouldn’t do the same is if you’re already planning on buying the trade paperback. And please remember, every time you trash the comic industry and how they don’t let writers and artists get into the creator-owned game, just remember that if you don’t support Marvel’s foray into creator-owned comics, this will probably be the LAST creator owned comic put out by Marvel. It’s like local music or your local arthouse cinema: if you don’t support it, it will go away. So take a chance with your $3.99 and see what you think?

We’ve just learned from an official announcement from Sony that they have cast who will play Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man movie directed by Marc Webb. The movie opens July 3rd 2012 and will be released in both 2D and 3D. Here is a picture of him followed by the official Press Release.

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012.  The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt.  Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

New York, NY – June 28,  2010 – Marvel Entertainment, LLC announced today that it has appointed Jeph Loeb as Executive Vice President, Head of Television, a newly created division of Marvel Entertainment.  In this new role, Mr. Loeb will work alongside Dan Buckley, Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc., to translate Marvel’s popular characters and stories to the television medium, in both live-action and animation formats. First up on my list is Action Comics #890. This is the first issue written by  DC’s newest exclusive, Paul Cornell, with art by the incredibly talented Pete Woods. With Cornell coming on board this book will be all about Lex Luthor! How could you not like a book all about Lex? Especially when Paul Cornell, writer of the acclaimed Captain Britain and MI-13, will be writing it.

The next book I’m excited for the most is Invincible Iron-Man Annual #1. The Mandarin has had many different variations and interpretations of his origin. Now Matt Fraction and Salvadore Larroca give us the definitve origin of Iron Man’s oldest villain!

Hoo boy its almost hump day and you know what that means! Noooo not that get your heads out of the gutter! Its time for new comics! Well I guess you could have dirty thoughts about humping your comics…. ummm… yeah… Anyway I’m gonna do the usual drill of telling you a couple of books that I’m excited for the most this week. If you get these I’ll think you’re cool! And as always this list is brought to you by the best comic store in Salt Lake City. That would be none other than Dr Volts Comic Connection! It is located at 2043 E 3300 S in Salt Lake City and has everything to quench your geek thirst! And if they don’t have it there is a damn good chance they can get it for you! Superman #700

ITS A BIRD! ITS A PLANE! ITS SUPERMAN #700! Yeah yeah I know that was cheesy but can ya blame me?  I am so excited for this. Not only does it mark the end of the last couple of year of New Krypton story, which I liked but thought it lasted way too long. It also marks the beginning of J. Michael Straczynski’s run on the book. This is something I’ve been excited about for quite a while. From how he has spoken about the character he seems like he has a good grasp of how Superman should be written. If you want a little something extra to prove how JMS has been “knocking out of the park” over at DC, track down Brave and the Bold #33. It was a story that featured Wonder Woman, Zatanna, and Batgirl.  There is also a third story set in Superman’s past written by the man who killed Superman, Dan Jurgens!

Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark

A shark that hunts on land? A grizzly bear that hunts at sea? With a tagline like “THEY GOT MIXED UP” how can you not go wrong with a book like this. This book just looks like all sorts of fun and its brought to you by Jason Howard and local Utah artist Ryan Ottley. Ottley is best known for his work on the blockbuster Invincible series also from Image Comics. I’m going to go so far as to say if you don’t pick this up then you are not a fan of fun!

Deadline New York reported yesterday that Marvel has brought on the Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Openheimer, the writers behind the forthcoming Conan relaunch and Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens, to write a script for Dr. Strange.

Marvel Studios has hired Conanscribes Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write Dr. Strange, marking forward progress on a long-gestating superhero property which will likely be among the first Marvel films generated under the Disney banner.  Aside from Conan–the Marcus Nispel-directed Lionsgate film that stars Jason Momoa–Donnelly and Oppenheimer also scripted a live action adaptation of the vidgameUncharted: Drake’s Fortune for Sony and producer Chuck Roven, and they wrote a draft of the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys and Aliens for DreamWorks/Universal.

With writers being hired, some speculate that this could be the first Marvel film that could fly under the Disney banner, since Dr. Strange has been a free agent for a long time.  Which is not surprising, since The Sorcerer Supreme might sound more like a pizza than a kickass comic property to the uninitiated.

I, for one, would be quite happy to see Dr. Stephen Strange on the silver screen facing off against Dormammu.

It also makes me wonder if this might be one of those Marvel/Disney shorts that were talked about yesterday.

As far as casting, who do you guys think would make a good Sorcerer Supreme?  I’m thinking Timothy Dalton, but he might be a bit old.  Michael Sheen, maybe?

If many of you were like me this weekend and rushed to the theaters to get a huge dose of nostalgia via Toy Story 3, you were once again treated to an animated short prior to the feature film. Pixar/Disney have put together some fantastic shorts to precede their equally fantastic feature films (my favorite thus far being Presto) and now it looks like Disney may be looking to apply that same idea to their newest property, Marvel.

Latino Review is reporting a rumor that Disney and Marvel may be looking to introduce additional characters from the Marvel universe in 10-minute shorts preceding upcoming Marvel films:

Got a scoop from a well trusted source that Marvel/Disney are looking at doing 10 minute short films in front of their feature length movies that will introduce secondary characters like Black Panther, Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, etc.

There is no information on which upcoming Marvel movie they may debut these shorts with or who the first character to get the “shorts-treatment” would be – and, as stated before, this is just a rumor at this point, but an exciting concept none-the-less.

I for one think this could be a fun way to give 2nd and 3rd tier characters from the Marvel universe some solid screen time without the risk of shoveling tens of millions of dollars behind a lesser-known character and risk having it flop.
