Why Twitter is Like the Force

This is only mildly Star Wars related, so please indulge me.

In the events leading to the destruction of the first Death Star, the Death Star was used to destroy Princess Leia’s home planet of Alderaan.  Without being there and entirely through the force, Obi-Wan Kenobi felt that tragic event, remarking, “It’s as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

And it was true.

But this aspect of the force has been brought to us all through Twitter.

I don’t even really know all that much about George Steinbrenner outside of the cartoon of him on Seinfeld, but when he died yesterday, millions of voices cried out in terror and expressed that terror on Twitter, which I get on my phone.

After the initial destruction of Alderaan, there are only a few passing references to its destruction in A New Hope, it’s never mentioned again in the rest of the saga.  And, like Twitter, the voices were all suddenly silenced, because we’re all on to the next big thing.

It was only a minor observation, but I thought it was worth exploring and sharing.
