Jett Lucas, son of Star Wars maestro George Lucas, spilled the beans to the Flicks and the City news outlet.
He was at a press function and was grilled in perhaps one of the most ham-fisted and awkward probing ways possible by an interviewer about all things Star Wars. He does hint and tease at things. These obviously aren’t official confirmations of anything, but definitely clues we can look to.
First off, the story is definitely George Lucas. Jett recalls in the interview (posted below) that his dad told him a full year before the Disney sale that the script was being worked on. For anyone having a hard time wrapping their head around the idea that the story is in some way unfit for shooting because it needs more work, it’s been in the works for years now.
Secondly, this definitely answers a lingering question about George’s involvement as a consultant.
“He’s constantly talking to J.J. [Abrams]. Obviously J.J. was handpicked. [My dad] is there to guide, whenever, he’ll help where he can. At the same time, he wants to let it go and become its new generation.”
This is very good news to me. I think George Lucas mentoring the next generation of filmmakers making Star Wars can only be a great thing.
And he also teases, in a way that only someone in the know can, that he knows what the story is and that’s he’s very happy with it. Then he went on to coyly explain what would make him happy, which includes appearances by the classic characters, passing off the baton to a new generation.
Here’s the full interview for you to watch if you’d like.
As ever, Jett Lucas isn’t an official source, but about as close to one as you can get.
