Joe Nussbaum, the director of “George Lucas in Love” was able to spend some time talking with me about the 15th anniversary of his film on the latest episode of Full of Sith. Nussbaum himself is a filmmaker working in television and got his start on the heels of his degree at USC by making this mashup film of “Shakespeare in Love” and the trials and tribulations of George Lucas writing the first draft of “Star Wars.”
It’s hard to consider it a “Star Wars” fan film in the classic sense, since it’s not actually set in the universe, but it’s incredible nonetheless.
And since it skillfully combines two of my favorite movies, it was at the top of my must-see list in 1999 when it came out. I wasn’t disappointed and I still cherish the DVD. Particularly the behind the scenes on it. Nussbaum is a fascinating and fun guy to talk to and you can listen to my interview with him in the box above. There’s an hour of great content before it starts, but if you choose to skip ahead to just the Nussbaum interview it’s at about the one hour mark.
“George Lucas in Love” has been remastered in HD and is available on iTunes. I highly recommend it. It’s a wonderful film and even after 15 years doesn’t feel dated at all. Especially not if you love “Shakespeare in Love” as much as I do.
And be sure to tune in to this weekend’s new episode of Full of Sith, we’ll be giving away a “George Lucas in Love” poster signed by the filmmakers…
