REVIEW: Legendary: Marvel Fantastic Four Expansion

Legendary: Marvel is a wonderful deck building game that a lot of us here love and have talked about before. Here with a guest review of its second expansion, Fantastic Four, is Dartanian Richards.

The latest expansion to Upper Deck’s “Legendary” is now available for purchase. This new addition, “Legendary: Fantastic Four” brings, you guessed it, the Fantastic Four to the game as playable characters.

The $20 dollar box adds 100 new cards to the game, including the Fantastic Four and their ally, Silver Surfer. In addition, two new masterminds, their henchmen, and a handful of schemes are included to give Legendary players that much more flexibility in their games.

I promptly bought the expansion upon its release, and I was not disappointed. The Fantastic Four have great synergy with one another, in similar ways to other teams such as the X-Men. When you have played other FF cards previously in your turn, you’ll be able to activate a variety of effects, such as increasing recruit points or attack. In addition, many of the cards have a new ability called “Focus” that adds another layer of strategy to your deck building by allowing you to spend recruit points to activate special abilities.

As with the previous expansion, “Dark City”, the masterminds, villains, and schemes included in Fantastic Four set are noticeably more difficult than those included in the base game. Galactus is, understandably, very hard to take down and makes for a challenge nearly every play. His Master Strike ability removes a space from the city, making it harder to keep villains from escaping, and once he gets all five master strikes, its game over. His 20 attack makes him formidable, so fortunately both he and each of his Heralds have a handicap called “Galactic Threat” which can be used to temporarily weaken them and allow a strike to land.

All in all, you get a good amount of new material for the price point, as these hundred cards add a multitude of fresh combinations for Legendary players to try. Just make sure you are prepared for a tough fight.
