Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is the film adaptation of the first half of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling book Breaking Dawn. It continues the story of human Bella and vampire Edward as they walk down the aisle towards matrimonial bliss and then honeymoon on a secluded island. The honeymoon is cut short, however, when Bella realizes she’s pregnant.
To coincide with the release of Breaking Dawn Part 2 on DVD and Blu-ray, an extended edition of Part 1 has hit store shelves.
“As Twilight series devotees know, there was a lot of ground to cover in adapting Breaking Dawn to the screen,” said director Bill Condon. “Between the wedding, the honeymoon, the birth, and everything in between, naturally there were things that didn’t make it into our final cut. But I wanted to make sure that for all the Twihards out there, there was a chance to see some of these cut scenes – several of which are fan favorites from the book.”
From what I could tell, three scenes were added to the theatrical version of the film. In order, they are: a conversation about eggs during Edward and Bella’s honeymoon, a scene in which Rosalie serves Jacob food in a dog dish and says, “Eat up, mongrel,” and he throws it at her, and a scene where Jacob and Alice talk on the deck of the Cullens’ house. None of these scenes really adds anything to the film.
Is it worth purchasing the film for these 8 minutes? Unless you read these scenes in the book and are thrilled to learn they made it into the film, then no. What if you don’t own the film? Should you purchase this version? Not unless you have zero interest in the bonus features available on the original version of the DVD.
Honestly, the best thing the extended edition has going for it is the pretty box art.
My recommendation? Buy the original release of the film or wait until the entire series is released in an ultimate boxed set (because you know it’s going to happen).
