There’s a lot of cool geek releases today. First up:
The Clone Wars theatrical movie. This was the kick off to the great show I’ve been ranting about. Granted, the film wasn’t as good as the series has been, but my thinking about it is that this was the first story they had to tell for the rest of it to make sense and the pacing seemed weird because it’s literally three episodes scotch taped together. Having said that, I really, really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to picking it up. It’s also important to note that this is the first Star Wars title that is available on [Blu-ray]. And I think this is what, more than anything, is going to get me to switch over.
The next most important release today is Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and if you click that link, it will take you to Amazon where you can buy the fancy-schmancy 3 disc special edition for only $17.99, which is a bloody steal. I really, really dug this movie and I would like to assume that all of you did, too. If you didn’t, you have my sincerest sympathies. (This too is available on [Blu-ray])
My next most important nerd recommendation for the day comes in the form of Firefly: The Complete Series on Blu-Ray. It’s reasonably inexpensive for a complete series on Blu-ray and if you don’t like this series then there is, indeed, something wrong with you. And maybe if we can show enough love for the show by buying this for ourselves, we’ll get more installments of it, somehow.
Kung Fu Panda is also coming out this week, though for some reason they decided to release it on Saturday of last week instead of Tuesday. My expectation is that they just wanted to confuse people. Having said that, I really enjoyed this movie and though that it might be Dreamworks’ best 3D animated movie (though that isn’t saying much at all…)
For those of you who are into classic Disney shorts, Disney is releasing their fourth (and final) volume of Donald Duck 1951-1961 . This is certainly good times. And we all love to watch the duck that gets stuck with all the bad luck.
And finally, in honor of the Armistice signed on this day 90 years ago today that ended World War I, Band of Brothers [Blu-ray] is being released. I’ve never actually seen this, though I’ve wanted to for a very long time. Anybody have any opinions on it? I’ve been told it’s better than Saving Private Ryan, but that’s not a giant feat for anything set in WWII either..
