In 1993, dinosaurs ruled the earth once again. Steven Spielberg’s mega-blockbuster Jurassic Park, a film 65 million years in the making, hit theaters with the force of an impact tremor. It ushered in a new era of CGI technology and helped pave the way for the films we see today.
Now, Variety reports that Universal and Hasbro are joining forces to relaunch toys for the dinosaur franchise. Toys haven’t been produced since 2001, when Jurassic Park 3 hit theaters. Now, though, with Jurassic Park 4 on the horizon and the original (and best of the series) playing in 3D in April, the merchandising can kick into high gear.
“Hasbro’s innovative approach to all of its products has made the company an ideal partner as ‘Jurassic Park’ has evolved over the last 20 years,” said Universal Partnerships and Licensing president Stephanie Sperber. “Hasbro has been with us every step of the way, and we look forward to continuing our relationship and adding another blockbuster to this iconic series.”
The products planned include playsets, games, role play items, action figures, plushies, dolls, and more. What is still unknown is whether a large focus will be placed on the original film or merely on the fourth installment. I think I’d buy a Muldoon action figure, if he had his hat. He’s always been my favorite character in the film. Don’t tell me whenever you see a velociraptor coming at you from the side, you don’t say, “Clever girl.” I know you do.
Jurassic Park 4 hits theaters June 13, 2014, and the toys are set to be released summer of the same year.
