Eccentric filmmaker Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Ace Attorney, 13 Assassins) has been working on Yakuza Vampire flick ‘Gokudou Daisenso’ (Yakuza Apocalypse: Underworld War) for some time now, so his followers will be pleased to know we got a new trailer and release date handed to us this week. The film, which follows awkard Yakuza initiate Akira Kageyama, will tell us the tale of what might happen should a Yakuza be ordered to “continue life as a Yakuza Vampire.”
Although live action Japanese films of this nature are rarely subtitled for distribution in North America, Miike’s films are an exception after the international cult following he grew with ‘Ichi the Killer,’ so we can keep our fingers crossed for Western distribution. Personally, I’m hoping for more over-the-top action sequences and some campy vampire Yakuza action. Watchers be warned, however, that Miike’s films are disturbing to many due to their eccentric and often laissez faire depictions of torture and violence.
