Warner Brothers released a new trailer for ‘King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword’, Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming fantastical spin on the classic legend. Man, this thing looks CRAZY. It looks batsh!t insane in the best of ways. I’m pretty sure that it won’t be “good” or a “Tentpole” like the studio expects it to be. Perhaps a January, February or even March release could have helped recoup some of the two hundred milly plus in costs. Let’s be real here, It’s coming out one week after ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy vol. 2’ and one week before ‘Alien: Covenant’, so you know the Bros. have so much confidence in it. However, against my better judgement, I am quite excited for this movie.
The trailer shows quite a bit of interesting facts about this new King Arthur story. It shows how a young Arthur sees his parents get killed while a loyal servant to the rightful King takes the little boy Arthur. The trailer then shows a hesitant Arthur who doesn’t want the Excalibur or the power and responsibility that comes with it and quite frankly doesn’t get what “all the fuss is about”, but fate and the Lady of the Lake have different plans for rightful King. All of this is accompanied by the SWEET tunes of Led Zeppelin. I have no idea what “Babe, I’m Going to Leave You” has to do with Dark Ages Britain, but I guess this film presupposes that it does have something to do with Dark Ages Britain. Think of it as a ‘King Arthur: Year Zero’ with some familiar elements of the lore and a menagerie of mystical beasts, blazing sorcery, kickass brawls and some key players from ‘Game Of Thrones’ thrown in for good measure.
I mean, why not completely dissemble the legend? Reveal that “sword in the stone” refers to how swords were actually forged from a cast in a block of stone. Let Merlin be some clever dodger who knows all the ‘tricks’ and tells Arthur on the sly which gets written as “magic”. Maybe include a scribe following Arthur around scribbling down notes that later get misinterpreted as legend. Excuse me for attempting to write a better story based on hero Arthur, sheesh.
I know people like to slag on Ex-Mr. Madonna, but I actually think Guy Ritchie deserves to be making style over substance blockbusters. His steampunk ‘Sherlock Holmes’ injected some life into a pretty worn out character. His ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ was exactly the kind of sleek and stylish blockbuster we should see more of. That movie is criminally underrated. Even the lesser Guy Ritchie films are at least diverting in an “I don’t have a problem with this existing” kind of way, which is a higher standard than most blockbusters manage to reach these days.
‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ will premiere on May 12th and will star Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Eric Bana, Aiden Gillen, Katie McGrath, and Djimon Hounsou.
