I told you last week why “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” doesn’t suck, and it seems that the world agrees. Paramount’s live action reboot of the TMNT franchise was predicted to peak at $45 million opening weekend but the titular heroes on the half shell raked in $65 million domestic (93.7 million worldwide) over its opening weekend, including $4.6 million Thursday night, knocking “Guardians of the Galaxy” from the number one spot.
I’m aware that public opinion and box office don’t necessarily equate to a quality flick, and I’m aware that the movie has problems, some more severe than others, as I outlined in the above linked piece. I simply don’t care, I enjoyed the movie and I want more.
Michael Bay will return as producer and writers Josh Appelbaum an André Nemec have agreed to write the script. My hope is now that we’ve established this particular flavor of the TMNT universe they’ll be able to go in even stronger this time around and give us the live action Turtle’s flick we’ve all been dreaming about.
“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before… The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.” said Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group.
This will be an opportunity for the film makers to take the good faith the fans have given them and do it better. TMNT 2 is slated to hit theaters June 3, 2016.
