Thanks to Comic-Con it’s been a couple of weeks and I’ll note the highlights below, but the biggest release this week is Kick-Ass. There’s not much else to say about it. This was one of my favorite films of the year so far and it’s destined to be a classic. Buy the DVD and we can all hope to get a sequel.
Sam Mendes’ best film came out on Blu-ray today and I’m itching to pick it up: The Road To Perdition. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, this was a tremendous film with an even better cast. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, and Jude Law (among others) made this one of the best comic book adaptations ever made.
Next on the list might be the most important release. Criterion put out a box set of Akira Kurosawa’s rare first four films (Sanshiro Sugata, The Most Beautiful, Sanshito Sugata Part Two, The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail). This is an incredibly insightful box set and offers a window to the early mind of one of film’s greatest directors. This is a must have for any Kurosawa fan.
Then we have the release of William Goldman’s original screenplay The Great Waldo Pepper. You can never go wrong with William Goldman and Robert Redford teaming up. Goldman talks about this film at length and what he thought was wrong with it in his books, but it’s way better than he gives it credit for.
Next on the list is The Breakfast Club. I’m not the biggest fan of this film, but I know so many of you do, so it made it onto the list.
As far as weeks gone by, I have to mention Batman: Under the Red Hood. It was a top notch cartoon and if you don’t have it yet, you’re missing out.
Also, Fanboys came out on Blu-ray. I saw it for the first time recently and it was much better and much more charming than I expected it to be. And despite what anyone else might say, I want to see Kevin Smith’s Cop Out, which also came out.
