In our penultimate week of releases before the Christmas holiday, we have a great lineup this week. First off, there is Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds on Blu-ray. There’s a lot of things I want to say about this film, so many, in fact, that I wrote up a review of the Blu-ray for The Huffington Post. (I’ll attach the link as soon as it goes live.) Long story short, this is a great film worth buying on a hi-def format.
Season 3 of the original Star Trek series is coming out on Blu-ray today. This is good news for a couple of reasons. First off, it’s Star Trek in hi-def. Secondly, it’s a dual version release with the enhanced special effects and the original show on the same disc. I’m still so in love going through my first season, I haven’t even bought season 2 yet, so this is incentive for me to get my act together.
Those of us who are into comic books and animation can finally rejoice: MTV’s production of The Maxx is finally getting a release. This is a cartoon that I’ve waited a long time to see in a quality format that wasn’t just downloaded from the internet. I loved watching this show on MTV (back when it was cool) and I loved the comic book. This is good news for all of us.
I know I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m going to put G-Force on my list today. I’ll explain why. My kids have been watching this over and over and over again and, to be honest, it’s not that bad. It’s a really fun kids movie with an amazing cast (Bill Nighy, Sam Rockwell, Nic Cage, Penelope Cruz, and Jon Favreau, among others.). So what if it looks stupid and about half the jokes only work if you’re under 12, it’s work for plenty of entertainment for both of my under-12 year olds.
The last thing I will mention, since someone will point it out if I don’t, is The Hangover. It didn’t look like my type of movie, I didn’t see it, but it made a lot of money and I know there are people out there who will be sad if I don’t include it on my list.
