With The Golden Globes over, it’s time for the Oscars to shine down on the “best” that Hollywood had to offer us last year. In news that will be pleasing for geeks, “Gravity” ties for the most nominations with “The Wolf of Wall St.” Meanwhile “12 Years a Slave” is close behind with 9.
Other pleasing nominations for us here at BSR! include another nomination for John Williams and the inclusion of “Get a Horse” (the Mickey Mouse cartoon which played before “Frozen”) for best animated short. “The Act of Killing” should also be on top of everyone’s Oscar pool for Best Documentary. It was fantastic, as was “20 Feet from Stardom,” which I got the chance to see earlier this year at SXSW.
However, it’s nearly unforgiveable that “Pacific Rim” didn’t receive a single nomination for visual effects, sound design, etc. For shame, Oscar. Also missing, in my opinion, is any nomination for “Fruitvale Station.” I would put Michael B. Jordan’s performance in that up against any of these nominees, easily. However, it appears there is only room for one movie about racial injustice, and “12 Years a Slave” just had better PR people behind it.
Meanwhile, someone did a great job promoting “Captain Phillips,” “Nebraska,” “Philomena,” and “Dallas Buyers Club.” Not that they don’t deserve it, but these were all kind of sleeper nominees. On the other hand, I’m not sure by what miracle “The Lone Ranger” got nominated for not just one, but two, Academy Awards.
And also, from now on, let’s remember that it’s “Oscar nominated ‘Jackass Presents – Bad Grandpa’” mmmkay?
