As I’m sure we all expected the sequel to “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” was the king this weekend. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” opened at $73.6 million, a good $50+ over the number two spot. In fact it made more than the rest of the top 10 combined. However, the competition wasn’t exactly tough. The only other movie opening in wide release over the weekend was another Tyler Perry’s Madea something or other. While Hobbit 2 did well, it didn’t match up to it’s predecessor which opened about $10 million dollars higher. Still a solid opening, and the fan base can be relied on to come back for the third part of the series.
- The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug: $73.6 Million up against little competition and maybe some bad weather. Next weekend it fights Ron Burgundy.
- Frozen: $22 Million. A 30% drop but still holding strong in it’s 3rd week of wide release.
- Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas: $16 million and the lowest opening for a Madea movie yet.
- Catching Fire: $13.1 Million and a 50% drop, I’m curious to see if Frozen experiences the same in it’s 4th week.
- Thor: The Dark World: $2.7 million. I’m pretty shocked that this is a top 5 earning. A lot of movies have failed pretty badly in the last month and Thor kicked ass.
Next week Anchor Man 2 hits, I’m sure it will do well but I don’t know if it will be enough to beat The Hobbit. We also have the wide release of “American Hustle” which could be top 5 but won’t be a killer. I feel the same way with “Saving Mr. Banks”, it seems like it will do ok but Hobbits and news mustaches are tough competition. There is a new kids 3D dinosaur movie next week as well and that will probably nab money for weeks because kids will watch anything and 3D prices inflate a movies gross a tad.
