Marc Webb’s take on Spider-Man isn’t getting nearly as much love as the Raimi trilogy. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” earned just shy of $92 million during its domestic opening which is middling for Spidey. The first Webb/Garfield Spider-Man opened to $62 million and the first sequel, “Spider-Man 2” opened at $88 million. Both of those films opened over a July 4th weekend as well. The newest installment was also propped up by 3D showings and IMAX showing which definitely help that number. Maybe its the bad reviews (our audio review and round table review) or maybe it’s that we’ve had 5 Spider-Man movies in 12 years with the same villain for a few of them, but people seem to not be flocking to theater for the Spider-Man anymore. However, overseas Spidey is doing fine. He’s racked up $277 million so far so maybe Americans are just tired of him?
Not much else happened in the box office over the weekend. Spider-Man was the only wide release.
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2: $91.6 in week 1.
- The Other Woman: $14.4 and a 42% drop puts it a tad over its budget.
- Heaven is for Real: $8.6 and a 40% drop puts this up to $65.5 total on a $12 budget.
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier: $7.77 and a 52% drop, I’m blaming Peter Parker for the big drop but Cap has made $237 domestic so far.
- Rio 2: Just short of Cap at $7.71 this sequel has made back it’s budget now.
Next weekend we have 3 comedies, one animated, coming out so I don’t think Spidey will have much competition until Godzilla comes to town.
A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
