With a lull in the big budget action flicks slated for summer release the past weekend was a bit slower than normal with about $140 million made by the top 12 films. Last summer over the same weekend we had “Monsters University,” “World War Z.” and “Man of Steel” in the theaters so it makes sense that a weekend of comedy and musical releases would be lower. This last weekend saw a generic comedy sequel, “Think Like a Man Too” barely knock off last weeks winner “22 Jump Street.” Jump has already cleared the $100 million mark and is doing well even though it had a 52% drop from last week. Next weekend “Transformers: Age of Extinction” is the only new film in wide release so the top 2 from this week may have a solid holdover for folks who aren’t interested in the Transformers franchise.
The numbers below are actual box office receipts.
- Think Like a Man Too: $29,241,911 is just under the originals opening.
- 22 Jump Street: $27,460,995 is just shy of $110 domestically and almost $150 world wide.
- How to Train Your Dragon 2: $24,719,312 a 50% drop from last week, but edging close to $100 domestically.
- Jersey Boys: Clint Eastwood directed this Broadway adaptation, $13,319,371 in week 1.
- Maleficent: With $12,910,766 this film has now surpassed its $180 budget.
A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
