I will admit that I am very surprised that a generic Liam Neeson action flick dethroned Lego. That’s right “Non-Stop” or as I like to call it Taken On A Plane was the weekend winner, followed by “Son of God.” It is good to see that “Non-Stop” did well, it isn’t a sequel or a prequel or a reboot or remake of an 80’s movie and it performed well. It is also the third winner that Universal has put out in 3 months. I’m a bit weirded out that people went to see “Son of God” because it is basically the Jesus parts of a mini-series from The History Channel. Almost all of it aired on TV already. I guess it’s just that cinema magic.
Not to be left out, “Frozen” broke $1 Billion. It has yet to open in Japan so it will continue to rake in money and should be in the top grossing movies all time. It is already only 1 of 5 movies to break that mark without being a sequel or prequel.
- Non-Stop: $30 million for Taken On a Plane.
- Son of God: $26.5 for the thing you saw on TV already.
- The LEGO Movie: $21 million and a 33% drop in week #4.
- The Monuments Men: $5 and a 37% drop in week #4. Close to making back the $70 million budget.
- 3 Days to Kill: $4.9 million and a 60% drop in week #2. Not a good sign, sure it had a $28 million budget but spent tons on marketing.
Next week we have the sequel to “300” and the adapted cartoon “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” to shake things up.
