I love The Rock. I”m just going to get that out of the way. Even with my love of Dwayne, I”m shocked that “San Andreas” had such a good weekend. It got bad reviews, including ours, and really just seemed very generic. It should be noted that 44% of the haul came from 3D tickets. However, the movie also kicked ass everywhere. It was #1 in 55 out of 60 markets worldwide. That”s impressive.
You”ll notice that “San Andreas” is the only new release in the top 5. That”s because the Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper film “Aloha” bombed. It brought in just $9.6 million. It lost out to movies in their second, third, and fifth weeks. Not good.
“Tomorrowland” took a steep dive, while “Pitch Perfect 2,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” all did pretty well. None had a steep drop, all are holding well.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
