With newcomers “Ted 2” and “Max” hitting, it was possible that “Jurassic World” could fall out of the top spot, but “Ted 2” unperformed and even with a solid holdover “Inside Out” couldn’t bring down the juggernaut. “Jurassic World’ also became the fastest to $500 million domestic (17 days), beating out “The Avengers” by 6 days. Along with that domestic gross, World has raked in $746 million internationally.
“Ted 2” couldn’t live up to the original and ended up making about $20 million less, which was not what Universal was expecting. It also didn’t get great reviews so the holdover probably won’t be good. “Max” did ok, and has decent reviews but it’s basically a movie about a dog with PTSD so it didn’t have a massive audience to start with. I’m just hoping it doesn’t end with a spurt of people getting Belgian Malinois dogs.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
