Box Office Report

I held out for the actual numbers this week because the estimated numbers for the top 2 films were within a few hundred thousand dollars of each other. “Inside Out” and “Jurassic World” flipped spots when the actuals hit, by $500,000 the latest Disney/Pixar flick finally took the top spot in its third week.

“Inside Out” has shown to have great holdover, while it took a while to knock off the juggernaut of “Jurassic World” it was still able to, all while beating out “Terminator: Genisys” and “Magic Mike XXL.” Both of those new releases failed to live up to the predecessors. Mike made $12.8 million compared to the originals $39 million while Terminator underperformed at $27 million.

If you look at the whole Terminator franchise, only the original has made less, but that was 1984 and it was not nearly the same market and film. Looking at the latest 3 films Genisys has had the worst opening both domestically and overseas. It is still making money but each film makes a little less.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
