This week is kind of a weird week for the Box Office. The big story is neither of the top 2 films. They both did about as expected. People are talking about Depp in “Black Mass” but it’s not doing anything special or being raved about. “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” did ok, about what’s expected for the second installment of another YA novel franchise.
The big deals come with #5 and something waaaay down the list. “Everest” hit at #5 but it only opened in IMAX. It was in 545 theaters and made over $7 million. That is pretty damn solid. Along with that, “Sicario” did something pretty amazing. It opened in only 6 theaters and made over $400k, which is around $65k per theater. That is just insane, have you even heard of it? I hadn’t. That’s impressive.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
