BLU-RAY REVIEW: Sin City

sincityblurayIn 2005, Frank Miller’s classic series of graphic novels Sin City hit the silver screen with the help and collaboration of director Robert Rodriguez.  Four years later, we have the definitive home video version of the film in a brand new pristine Blu-ray release.

This double-disc set is packed to the gills with special features and alternate versions of the film.

Disc one contains the original 124 minute theatrical version of the film and is accompanied by two very entertaining audio commentaries.  As Rodriguez as an anchor, he shepherds us through the film first with Frank Miller and then (in my favorite of the two commentaries) with Quentin Tarentino and Bruce Willis.  There isn’t much more entertaining in this world than listening to Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarentino geek out about a movie as thoroughly entertaining as Sin City.

As for the transfer of the film to Hi-def, I have to say my breath was took.  This is the perfect film to test out your home theatre systems on.  Rodriguez captured and altered such an incredible image that it is the sharpest film I’ve seen on my Blu-ray player.

Disc two contains more special features than you could shake a fist at.  The main event for the second disc is, to be sure, the uncut versions of each of the stories.  These are the same as you’d find on the extended version of the DVD they put out a couple of years ago.  The picture quality is every bit as good as the main feature and it makes me want to spend all day just watching Sin City.  The “Blu-ray exclusive” Kill ‘Em Good Interactive Comic Book wasn’t that fun, but if that’s the special feature you’ve purchased this set for, then you’re in the wrong business.  Then we have a series of behind the scenes featurettes that are a pleasure to watch, taking us through the costumes, props, cars and other aspects of the film.  There are segments devoted to Quentin Tarentino’s guest director status and how Rodriguez convinced Miller to let him adapt the property.  Signature features on Rodriguez discs that I wouldn’t have missed for the world: 15 Minute Film School and 10 Minute Cooking School.

In fact, as soon as I watched the 10 Minute Cooking School, I got severely hungry for “Sin City Breakfast Tacos”.  I want to make them and eat them right now.

All in all, this disc is a must have.
