The Wrap has gone on the record “confirming” that the next “Star Wars: Anthology” film will be an origin story of fan-favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett that takes place in a separate timeline.
The next “Star Wars” anthology movie due in 2018 that recently lost director Josh Trank will be a Boba Fett origin story, confirming one of many rumors that have appeared online in the last several months,TheWrap has learned.
With rebel spies the focus of “Rogue One,” the next anthology film will explore the rich world of bounty hunters in the “Star Wars” galaxy.
Writer-producer Simon Kinberg has been closely involved in the creative process for the second anthology film, which is set in a separate movie universe that is not associated with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” or upcoming Episodes VIII and IX.
Since so much of the information in the report is clearly not accurate, it would be easy to discard this report completely. The anthology films are not in a separate universe as the numbered “Star Wars” episodes. And this has been long rumored since we first learned about the standalones years ago.
Second, “confirmed” means coming from official, on the record sources. There are none in this report and Disney refused to comment.
Third, we already have a Boba Fett origin story. It’s called “Attack of the Clones.” Boba’s story was taken a step further in incredibly cool ways on “The Clone Wars,” though he was left without his armor or ship in his possession. Lucasfilm has been resolute in their insistence that what we saw in the prequels, and really everything George worked on whether it’s public or not, is canon. So if this is the story they’re going for, we know what the starting point is.
On the other hand, if this is true, and we are getting a Boba Fett “origin,” it seems likely that they would be raiding the unused scripts for “The Clone Wars.” There have also been numerous reports from Dave Filoni, Daniel Logan, and others, that there were episodes of “The Clone Wars” planned to set Boba Fett against Cad Bane and unite him with both his ship and his armor. That sounds an awful lot like an “origin” in a pedantic sense to me.
These were at least partially voiced, Daniel Logan commented at one point that it was the best work he’d ever done. It would be easy to bring him back in the role. It would also be easy to bring Temuera Morrison (who played Jango Fett) to play the part, or even Bodhi Taylor, who played the intermediate aged clones.
Whoever they get, I would love to see that movie on the big screen. But is there a confirmation of this? Not at all.
And if it was what Josh Trank was working on, there’s every chance that they could switch ideas for the second anthology film completely. What was true last week might be completely false this week.
As ever, take “Star Wars” rumors like this with a grain of salt and don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.
The second “Star Wars: Anthology” film is set to hit theatres in 2017.
