Allow me to preface this little bit of news with this:
I am not some Broadway officianado. I have seen some Off-Broadway productions here in Utah locally, and they were quite enjoyable, and should I ever make it to NYC one day, I will surely check out some Broadway show. But will I be making a special trip to do so? No.
So, that brings me to Spider-Man: Turn Out the Dark which is coming to Broadway in a few months. It’s a Spider-Man musical directed by Julie Taymor and featuring music from Bono and The Edge – tempting, isn’t it? Last week on Good Morning America they had the actor on who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man on to sing some of the songs from the upcoming production, and during that piece we got a glimpse at some of the villains, namely Green Goblin and an original creation for the show, Swiss Miss. Yes, like the hot chocolate.
So, at the risk of sounding unsophisticated, a hater of the arts, and overly “macho”: These are really lame.
My thought process is this: Who is this production geared towards? I’m thinking this isn’t going to exactly appeal to all the snooty Broadway-goers looking for some artful and over-priced way to spend an evening, and I don’t exactly see a swarm of comic book fans descending on New York to catch this – especially now seeing these costumes.
The last thing I want to see with my superheroes and their villains is them all dressed up in affeminite costumes (yes, I recognize the irony in that statement), prancing around the stage, and singing about how they are going to punch something. It all just seems like a really lame idea. I guess maybe I am just not intelligent or sophisitcated enough to see and appreciate this new “artful” take on Spider-Man . . .
