Review: Pilot Season #1 39 Minutes

39 Minutes #1 is a great place to start this years Pilot Season from Top Cow, their annual initiative to introduce new books as well as new creative teams. It’s hard jumping into a series of comic books that you KNOW will not be finished based on the readers votes, but it’s always fun to read them. All the artists and writers are putting out the best work they can muster in hopes of being able to tell their story. Track down the trade paperback from 2007 of the first Pilot Season to see where all those great contributors are now.

This ‘season’ kicks off with a well written action packed bank heist story by William Harms with pencils by Jerry Lando. I don’t want to give the story away but the gun toting Ex marines doing the robberies are as brutal as possible, killing everyone in their way. The pencils from Lando really stand out, flowing action scenes and emotion filled faces from sad to terrified are captured with skill to tell a good story. If you don’t have a lot of books to pick up this week browse thru this and give it a shot. I know I’m looking forward to all 5 issues.

There is also a 6 page back up featuring the next Pilot book “Asset”.
