Review: NYX #4

Marjorie Liu is being rather consistent. Four issues in and her run on NYX is still kicking ass and taking names. With this most recent issue she’s given the miniseries a good sense of direction and build up without giving too much away, leaving you as a reader, wanting more. Liu brings in a forgotten X-Men character, Cecilia Reyes, reminding the reader that this is part of the Marvel Universe, and this is a book about the mutants who fell through the cracks. It’s nice to see Liu making the characters her own, altering Tatiana’s lame ass power into something that is actually interesting. When her blood comes into contact with another living creature she becomes it, human and animal alike. But, beyond that, she can absorb their memories as well, similar to Rogue. The book’s art is still in the same vein as series co-creator Josh Middleton, which works for the book, but it certainly doesn’t have the same meticulous attention to detail that Middleton painstakingly puts in his art. But all in all, it’s a fun read and it’ll be interesting to see what the outcome of the miniseries is.
