Captain Ultimate perfectly blends a comic intended for children with something the more mature reader can enjoy. The dialogue focuses on the one “pure” super hero, not the dark and brooding anti-heroes that have become so popular. Using savvy of current super hero issues the creative team behind C.U. is great at pointing out the terrible things that current super heroes do while making Captain Ultimate the shining pillar of virtue.

I am pleased to see that the book is building towards a larger story arc instead of simply throwing b-list villains at our protagonist with the hope of continued sales to the young masses. This beefy dog that uproots trees as toys is the protector of Milo, the only boy with real heart. The dog is given to Milo after a dinner of the only option, “5 delicious plates of meat loaf.” Because being the manly man he is, Captain Ultimate loves nothing more than meat loaf and his mustache.

If you’re looking for a book with gore, edge, violence, and minimal fart jokes you’re in the wrong place. This is meant for super hero fans and their kids and unapologetically points out the writer’s opinion on “anti-heroes” and the like. There really isn’t much to say on that matter, the writing is solid, the art is gorgeous, and the comic is a lot of fun. You need to make room for one more “Cap” in your life.
