REVIEW: BATWOMAN #0

J.H. Williams III is a spectacular artist that caught my attention with the covers for Alan Moore’s ABC series Promethea, and everytime I see his work it has advanced and evolved. His previous work on Batwoman with Greg Rucka in the pages of Dective Comics is beautiful and now he’s back on Batwoman sharing writing duties with W. Haden Blackman, as well as handling the art.

Batwoman #0 consists of 16 story pages from the new series and a 7 page preview of Detective Comics #871.
I don’t know what Williams has written before but this is the a great look at his work as Batman (Bruce) follows Kate Kane to see if she really is Batwoman.

Batman puts on a few disguises to track her, I’m assuming to size her up for possible inclusion in Batman Inc. It will be interesting to see if DC’s usually sloppy cross-book continuity can hold up with different Batmen running around the DCU.

The blended artwork from Williams and Amy Reeder feels natural with color by Dave Stewart, and the familiar thick bat shaped panel angles jutting out everywhere echoes the previous Rucka penned story.

This issue is all setup and we don’t get a word from Kate Kane/Batwoman so her voice as written by Williams remains to be heard, but it looks promising, as far as zero issues go this one is well worth the cash. I cant wait to see the next issue.
