Super Hero Hype! is reporting that Kick-Ass helmer, Matthew Vaughn, has been confirmed as director for FOX’s prequel/reboot of the X-Men movie franchise, X-Men: First Class. The basic script outline was written by X-Men 1 & 2 director, Bryan Singer – who will also co-produce along with Lauren Shuler Donner, and then Marvel and FOX brought in the writing team behind the upcoming Thor, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, to do some rewrites and fine-tune the script.
There has apparently been no word on cast – returning or new. I’d imagine it depends on what their intentions are with the franchise. If this is meant to be a “reboot” for the whole franchise, it’d probably make more sense for them to just recast the whole thing. But if it’s just supposed to be the next X-Men movie that happens to be a prequel, then maybe they will bring back the likes of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
So here’s the most interesting part of all this for me, this is the tentative release date:
June 3, 2011
That is just over a year to make this film. So, what do you think? Do you think they will make this date? If so, what could that mean about the possible “rushed” quality of the movie? Or do you think this will likely be pushed back once things get rolling?
FOX also released the official description:
“X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”
