For those of you who have ever wished “Boy, I would sure like to see some Marvel Superhero Adventures, but only with monkeys instead of humans!”, your day has arrived.
Marvel has decided to do a four issue limited-series in which Gibbon visits an alternate “Marvel Apes” universe, where all our favorite superheroes are apes (obviously). Why? Well, because some jackass yelled out the idea “Hey, you’ve done Marvel Zombies! Why not Marvel Apes?!” at a convention a few years ago of course! Apparently, the idea struck such a cord with Ol’ Joe that he’s making it a reality because, you know, it’s the next logical step after Marvel Zombies…
Marvel Apes is scheduled to be released this September and the series will be written by Karl Kesel with art by Ramon Bachs and covers by John Watson. If there is one person that’s excited about this, it’s Kesel himself:
“MARVEL APES is the sensational simian mini-series of the season! It’s four issues of furry fury and feces-flingin’ fun! It’s all your favorite Marvel characters—as you’ve never seen them before! If you only buy one mini-series next October about intelligent, super-powered apes and monkeys – it must be MARVEL APES!”
He even said in another interview,
“In some ways, Marvel Apes is a sprawling epic like Lord of the Rings, and the Gibbon is our Frodo— one small person dwarfed by the overwhelming forces that stand between him and his goal.”
Okay…
Look, I LOVE Marvel as much as the next guy, I really do, in fact Marvel pretty much dominates my comic hold, but this just looks lame. I mean, really? Marvel Apes? I thought Marvel Zombies was awesome, but I am going to pass on this one. For those of you who are interested (fans of Planet of the Apes, possibly?), select Marvel series will feature Monkey Variant covers throughout late August and September. Each week on Marvel.Com, these covers will be unveiled. Today Marvel unveiled the Monkey Variants to Ghost Rider #26 and Moon Knight #21:
