You have less than 72 hours to pledge to Silber Media’s most recent Kickstarter drive, thereby becoming the recipient of one of the most unique comic formats in the history of the genre.
Brian John Mitchell of the independent Silber Empire advertises his books are the size of a matchbook, and that’s a truth. The size of the books is no gimmick, instead a challenge to author and artist to make the most use of the smallest space to tell the best story. The micro-minis are funny, ethereal, sad, auto-bio, and surreal – and sometimes all of those things in one 1.5 x 1.5 package. Brian has collaborated with artists like Eric Shonborn, Kurt Dinse, Jason Young, and Dave Sim, but Mitchell is a veritable one man powerhouse who currently creates art, comics and music all via his own means and terms. You might be wondering why Mitchell needs the Kickstart when he’s already published 80 or so books, and the answer to your query is the noblist of all publisher goals: he’d like to treat his artists and collaborators a little better with up front incentives, as well as increase the amount of material available to his readers each year.
You can click through to read all the praise Brian has received, but I feel that Brian LeTendre’s blurb sums up the feel of these projects best:
The more I read of Mitchell’s minicomics, the more impressed I am. He has excellent command of the format – he understands what he can and can’t do, and he plays to its strengths. The stories are lean and mean, no filler, and even though the issues don’t take long to read, I find myself going back to particular issues for multiple reads.
