I just finished reading Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s first issue of “Kick-Ass” and I must say color me impressed.

Millar’s cinematic writing style, injected with his gritty sense of modern realism, is the perfect blend to do a book about a normal kid in the real world who decides to be a superhero. Reading it, all the feelings and wishes I had of being a superhero as a kid came rushing back to me and it made me remember all the reasons I became a comic-book nerd in the first place. Add to that a harsh brutality and you have a really great jumping off point for what could be a long-running book with a lot of steam.

Then, you have Romita who has come close to perfecting cinematic sequentials on a page with that classic Romita flair and you have something special. The art flows, dragging your eye neatly around the page and sucks you in. Dean White’s colors compliment the art perfectly and look like a more colorful (but washed out) version of Tim Sale-like watercolors.

All in all, I’d say this book is a must read and I can’t wait for #2.
