I started a hold at my local comic shop specifically for the New 52. I hadn’t regularly picked up comics in a long time and I figured that this would be a good chance to start up with some stories that weren’t laden with years and years of canon. Granted I have a good general knowledge of most of the characters but there are many that I know nothing about and I thought this relaunch was as good a time as any to start. So far I’ve liked most of what I’ve been reading and have been happy, but there are a few books that just aren’t cutting it for me for different reasons. I’m a picky person and sometimes simple things will put me off quickly so take it all with a grain of salt.

Static Shock: I vaguely knew about Static after catching bits of it on tv but I’ve never read the book and after 3 issues, I won’t read it again. Virgil annoys me and the faux gangster bullshit in this comic annoyed me even more. A few of the comics I’m dropping are relying too much on trying to be hip and keeping up with technology and it’s making them seem instantly dated to me.

Green Arrow: This book is trying way too hard to keep up with technology. Youtube celebrity villains, twitter, Q-pads. It all feels like it’s just pandering to kids and the story wasn’t interesting to me at all.

Suicide Squad: The only thing that had me interested in this book was Harley. I wanted to see how the reboot dealt with her weird ass. I enjoyed her but the book was too cheesy for me. The super Hispanic character is over the top, sharpshooters with one eyed masks galore and a story line intent on making you think they’ll kill off important characters every other issue killed this for me quick.

Mister Terrific: A billionaire genius crime fighter…how many of these does DC need? He is basically a technological genius mash-up of Green Arrow and Batman. He’s got Green Arrows problems running his company and Batman’s tragic past of losing a loved one. And shitty tattoos. I get my rich bad ass fill from the multiple Batman comics.

Batwoman: I wasn’t very familiar with Batwoman, I knew of her and her story of being a lesbian, but the book didn’t draw me in and the art isn’t really my style and the story line really isn’t aimed at me. Nothing really pushed me away this just isn’t my kind of book.

Legion of Super Heros: Too many characters that I’m unfamiliar with and can’t keep track of. I’m sure fans with more DC depth than me dig this but for me it of no interest. There are far too many characters for a casual reader like me.

O.M.A.C: I don’t care for the art and the story seems like a Techie Hulk. I liked the first issue but it quickly went downhill.

Hawk and Dove: There is nothing about this book that I like. I like Deadman but even his small part couldn’t keep me interested. The characters annoyed me, especially Hawk and the art creeped me out. Too many perfect smiles on people who look exactly the same.

Batman and Robin: I wanted rebooted titles. I don’t want Bats weighed down by his annoying ass crazy kid/sidekick.

Justice League International: These guys aren’t in the JL because they are B characters. Batman doesn’t really belong in here and the forcing of the international integration in the book made it feel unnatural.

I know I sound like a Negative Nancy here but there are books from the New 52 I really like. I’m really digging Animal Man, All Star Western, and the main story in Men of War. The secondary story in Men of War is low class propaganda but the book is good. I was surprised that I liked Frankenstein but I dig the Creature Commandos and the weirdness of it.

I may regret dropping some of these later on but I feel like I gave them a good chance. I almost dropped Batgirl after issue #1. Gail Simone is great but she has written her police officer character so badly that it pisses me off, and  I’m probably the only person that feels that way. If you think I’m dumb and my opinion on these books is just incredibly off base let me know why you like these books or other books you aren’t digging and are looking to drop.
