I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jacob Kearney, an independent artist and comic book writer. What drew me to Kearney’s work was the spectacular art. One glance tells you that that this guy knows what he’s doing. He could command a pencil in battle, it would draw a line in the sand, then beat you to death, your only consolation being that your obituary picture would look fantastic.
Kearney makes a living putting ink on people’s bodies and does it better than most. Bringing that talent to the page seems like a no brainer. To that end, he’s put together a graphic novel titled “Due North.” The book tells a story of betrayal and war, mix in some dragons and strange but awesome bird people and you’ve got a recipe for a good time.
With most books I want something that will force me to turn the page, but “Due North” had the opposite effect, I found myself lingering, less concerned with what would happen next and more concerned with the spectacle unfolding in his drawings.
But you don’t have to take my word for it, check it out.
I’m always in favor of supporting independent artists especially when they deserve the recognition, Kearney does, without question. You can pick up his book here, or if you’re in the Chicago area and looking for an amazing tattoo you can find him at Metamorph Studios.
Cheers.
